Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hama Rikyu Gardens is a feudal lord's garden in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, which dates back to the Edo period. It is a strolling garden with a tidal inlet that abuts the outer walls of Edo Castle. It was originally developed as a falconry ground and garden for the Tokugawa Shogunate, and after the Meiji period it became a detached palace for the Imperial family. After the war, it was donated to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and opened to the public.

Its distinctive feature is the scenery centered around the "Shioiri Pond" (Tide Pond), which takes in seawater from Tokyo Bay, and the contrast between the pond, which changes appearance with the ebb and flow of the tides, the serving of matcha tea at Nakajima no Ochaya (Nakajima no Ochaya), and the skyscrapers of Shiodome, Tsukiji, and Ginza in the background is photogenic. Another attraction is that you can enjoy seasonal flowers and trees (plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves), and you can take a quiet stroll despite being in the heart of the city.

Highlights

  • Tide pond and Nakajima teahouse: The highlight of the pond is the change in the water surface with the high and low tides. At the teahouse on the island in the pond, you can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets (opening hours and availability vary depending on the season and circumstances).
  • The contrast between the sea breeze and the city center: From various points in the garden, you can see the skyscrapers of Shiodome and Ginza and Tokyo Bay, and the contrast between the traditional garden scenery and the modern cityscape makes it a popular photo spot.
  • Seasonal flowers and treesYou can enjoy the changing seasons, such as plum blossoms from February to March, cherry blossoms from late March to April, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves in late autumn.
  • Historical remains: It is a valuable historical site dating back to the Edo period, with traces of the Shogun's falconry and the topography and stonework that convey the garden layout.
  • Water bus stop: On some days, you can take a water bus (operated by different operators and routes) from the dock within the park to Asakusa or Odaiba (operation times vary depending on the season and day of the week).

  • MannersPlease refrain from drinking alcohol, talking loudly, or playing on the playground equipment within the gardens. Please also observe basic park etiquette, such as not trespassing on planted or rock formations and taking your trash with you.
  • foot: The garden paths are gravel roads and have some steps. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Wheelchairs and strollers require caution in some areas.
  • Weather and SeasonThe tidal pond's scenery changes with the tide. Please be careful when it rains as some areas can be slippery.
