Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Kamakura Museum of Literature is a cultural facility that houses and exhibits materials related to authors and literary works associated with Kamakura. It features a Western-style building and gardens that change appearance with the seasons, and is particularly famous for its rose garden. Inside the museum, you can follow in the footsteps of authors who lived and created in Kamakura through materials such as handwritten manuscripts, letters, photographs, and favorite items. The museum also hosts events such as special exhibitions, readings, and lectures, making it popular not only with literature fans but also with tourists strolling around.

Highlights

  • Permanent exhibition: Manuscripts, letters, photographs, etc. of writers with ties to Kamakura. The fascinating exhibits offer a glimpse into the writers' creative processes and private lives.
  • Special exhibitions: Special exhibitions are planned around a theme. The collection changes depending on the season and theme, so you can discover something new no matter how many times you visit.
  • Western-style building and exhibition room: The design and atmosphere of the building itself are also a highlight. You can take your time to appreciate the materials in a calm atmosphere.
  • Rose Garden: The roses are in full bloom from spring to early summer and in autumn, attracting many visitors. There are also spots in the garden where you can see the Kamakura cityscape and the sea, making it a popular spot for photography.
  • Terrace and Garden Stroll: You can take a stroll through the lush garden and take a break, as well as enjoy the seasonal flowers.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Kamakura Station, or Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden) Yuigahama and Hase stations are easily accessible. The area is within walking distance, but there are slopes and paths, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
  • Bus: It may also be possible to access the area by bus from Kamakura Station or Ofuna Station. Please allow plenty of time for travel as roads can be congested during the tourist season.
  • By car: The surrounding roads are narrow and parking is limited, so we recommend using public transportation. If you wish to use a nearby paid parking lot, please check the location in advance.
  • Note: Please check the official website or map app for the latest access methods and routes (the route may change due to events or construction work).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Standard: Viewing the exhibits and strolling around the gardens takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • If you want to take your time and look at the special exhibitions carefully: about 2 hours.
  • If you plan to visit during rose season and include time for photography and rest, you should allow even more time.

Nearby spots

  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine: A representative shrine in the center of Kamakura. Recommended for worship and strolling around the grounds.
  • Yuigahama Beach and Zaimokuza Beach: A great spot for a stroll along the coast and gazing at the ocean.
  • Hasedera Temple and Kotokuin Temple (Great Buddha of Kamakura): Temples, shrines, and tourist attractions in the Hase area. A popular tour includes a visit to the literature museum.
  • Komachi-dori: A shopping street lined with souvenir shops and restaurants where you can enjoy shopping and eating.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The number of visitors increases during the rose viewing season (generally spring to early summer and autumn). Weekends and holidays are especially busy, so we recommend visiting early on a weekday.
  • Photography and exhibits: Many exhibits in the museum prohibit photography. Please follow the instructions of staff and signs in front of the exhibits.
  • Food and drink/bringing in: As a general rule, eating and drinking inside the building is often restricted. Please check the rules for use of rest areas inside and outside the building.
  • Footwear and clothing: There are slopes and cobblestone paths around the museum, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
  • Weather and Season: The best time to see the roses and events depend on the weather. Opening hours, exhibits, and whether or not there are any events change depending on the season, so be sure to check the official website for the latest information before visiting.
  • Manners: Please view the exhibits quietly, do not touch the exhibits, and be considerate of other visitors.

*The above information is a rough outline. Please be sure to check the Kamakura Museum of Literature's official website or official social media accounts before visiting for the latest information on opening hours, closing days, admission fees, access details, and more.
