Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mejiro Garden is a relatively small Japanese garden located in Mejiro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city center. It features a strolling garden design centered around a pond, where visitors can enjoy the changing seasons through waterfalls, stone arrangements, bridges, and plantings. Maintained and managed by Toshima Ward (or a designated manager), it is a popular spot for strolling, photography, and relaxation for both locals and visitors.

Highlights

  • A strolling garden with a pond: You can enjoy the garden scenery from different angles as you walk around the pond. The reflections on the water's surface and the arrangement of the stones evoke a sense of Japanese aesthetics.
  • Seasonal planting: The landscape changes with each season, from cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, to the shade of trees in summer, to the vibrant autumn foliage, and the tranquil branches of winter.
  • Bridges and stone structures: Bridges and charming stone structures placed within the garden make for excellent photographic compositions.
  • Quiet resting spots: You can relax on benches or in spaces with nice views (however, whether or not you can eat and drink varies depending on the location).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • The nearest station is Mejiro Station (South Exit) on the JR Yamanote Line, approximately a 6-8 minute walk away. It is also accessible from Ikebukuro Station, just one stop (approximately 2 minutes) away on the Yamanote Line.
  • Other information: While there are bus routes in the surrounding area, walking from the station is recommended. Visiting by bicycle is also convenient, but please follow the rules for bicycle parking.
  • Please check the official website or a map app for the address and detailed map before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

The garden isn't particularly large, so if you want to take your time enjoying the scenery and taking photos, allow 30-60 minutes. If you just want a quick look around, 20-30 minutes should be sufficient. Depending on the season and how crowded it is, it's recommended to allow plenty of time for your visit.

Nearby spots

  • Gakushuin University (Mejiro Campus) — The historic campus is nearby and easy to incorporate into your walking route.
  • Ikebukuro area (Sunshine City, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, etc.) — Accessible on foot or by train. You can also enjoy dining and shopping.
  • The area around Zoshigaya and Kishimojin Shrine is ideal for strolling, with its traditional temples and shrines, old townscape, and Zoshigaya Cemetery.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park gets busier on weekends, holidays, and during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. If you prefer a quieter experience, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
  • Etiquette: The garden is a public place of relaxation. Please be considerate of others by taking your trash with you, not damaging the plants or stones, and refraining from eating, drinking, or holding parties outside of designated areas.
  • Photography: Personal photography is generally permitted, but tripods, large equipment, and commercial photography may be restricted. Drone flights are prohibited. During busy times, please take photos from a location that does not disturb other visitors.
  • Pets: There may be restrictions on bringing pets. Please check the rules for pet owners in advance (e.g., keeping pets on a leash, cleaning, etc.).
  • Weather-related closures and temporary park closures: The park may be temporarily closed due to severe weather or facility maintenance. It is recommended to check the ward's information and the park's announcements before visiting.
  • Footwear: The garden has cobblestone and gravel paths, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
