Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Yufu, towering over Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, stands approximately 1,584 meters above sea level and is one of the most beautiful peaks in the Bungo region. Known as "Bungo Fuji" for its beautiful, nearly conical shape, the mountain has long been beloved for its commanding view of the Yufuin Basin and Beppu Bay. Formed by volcanic activity, the mountain features steep slopes and rocky ridges, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, flowers, autumn leaves, and snowscapes). The famous Yufuin Onsen hot springs are located at the foot of the mountain, making it an attractive spot for many visitors to combine sightseeing with hiking.

Highlights

  • The twin-peaked ridgeline and mountain shape: Mt. Yufu can sometimes be seen as a double-peaked mountain, with its sharp ridges and rocky areas creating a mountainous landscape. It is also a popular photo spot.
  • A panoramic view of the Yufuin BasinOn a clear day, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the town of Yufuin, Lake Kinrin, and even Beppu Bay and Aso in the distance.
  • Alpine plants and forest zone: Due to the difference in altitude, you can see beech forests and subalpine plants, and you can observe different vegetation in each season (spring flowers, autumn leaves, etc.).
  • Photo, sunrise and sunset spotsThe summit and ridgeline are ideal for taking photos of sunrises and sunsets. The silhouette seen from the Yufuin side is also popular.
  • Combine with sightseeing in Yufuin: Another attractive feature is that after hiking you can enjoy hot springs, meals, and museums at Lake Kinrin and the hot spring town.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Sudden changes in weather:The wind is strong and the temperature is low near the summit. Please check the weather forecast and be sure to bring rain gear and cold weather gear. Even in summer, it gets chilly in the evenings.
  • Difficult parts of the hiking trail:There are rocky areas, steep slopes, and exposed ridges, and some areas are slippery. Please bring trekking shoes, gloves, and trekking poles (if you are used to using them), and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Snow and ice in winter:In winter, there is snow and ice, so crampons and cold weather gear are necessary. If you do not have the necessary equipment or experience, please avoid the trail or consider hiring a guide.
  • Thunder and Summer Afternoon:In summer, thunderstorms often occur in the afternoon, so we recommend leaving early and descending in the morning.
  • Congestion/Peak Times:The trailhead and the area around Yufuin will be crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, during the autumn foliage season, and during the spring tourist season. Please be aware of crowded parking lots and public transport, and plan your trip early.
  • Safety measures:Please carry a map and an action plan, spare batteries for your cell phone, and plenty of water and food. Avoid climbing alone, and beginners should consider climbing with an experienced climber or using a guide.
  • Nature and local manners:Always take your trash with you, stay on the hiking trails, do not damage vegetation, and respect the rules prohibiting entry onto private property and fields. Please also respect local rules (regarding parking and quietness) when visiting hot springs and shops at the foot of the mountain.

Mount Yufu is an attractive mountain that can be enjoyed in combination with the scenery, nature, and sightseeing in Yufuin. Please be sure to prepare well in advance, check the weather, and take safety into consideration when heading out.
