Matsue Castle was built in the early Edo period and is said to have been completed by Horio Yoshiharu and others between 1607 and 1611. It is characterized by its stately black lacquered exterior and a precious surviving wooden castle tower, and is one of the 12 remaining castle towers that still retains its Edo period appearance. The stone walls, moats, and layout that made use of water transportation are well preserved, and the view from the castle that stretches all the way to Lake Shinji is captivating.

• Address: 1-5 Tonomachi, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture (approximate address around the castle)
• JR: About 15-20 minutes on foot or 5-10 minutes by taxi from JR Matsue Station. From the station, take the Matsue City Bus and get off at Otemae or Kencho-mae.
• Ichibata Railway: Accessible on foot from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station (approximately 10-20 minutes on foot, varies depending on the route).
• By car: Take the San'in Expressway to Matsue Nishi IC or Matsue Chuo IC and head towards the city center. There are municipal and paid parking lots around the castle, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend using public transportation.
• From the airport: If you are using Izumo Enmusubi Airport, take the limousine bus or airport shuttle bus to JR Matsue Station.
• Getting around: The area around the castle is suitable for sightseeing on foot, and the Horikawa sightseeing tour departure and arrival point is conveniently close by.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

• Crowds: It gets crowded during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, Golden Week, the summer tourist season, and at sunset over Lake Shinji. There may be long lines for the Horikawa River Cruise, so be sure to line up well in advance or check the operation status in advance.
• Note inside the building: The inside of the castle tower is made of wood and has steep, narrow stairs, so please wear comfortable walking shoes. There are some areas inside the castle tower that cannot be accessed with strollers or wheelchairs (please check with the facility in advance if you are using a wheelchair).
• Photography/Photography: Generally, photography is permitted, but there may be restrictions on using flash or tripods on exhibits. Please follow the designated rules.
• Nature and Climate: The area around Lake Shinji can be windy on some days and can get quite cold in winter. We recommend bringing warm clothing and rain gear.
• Manners: To protect cultural assets, entering and graffitiing outside of designated areas is strictly prohibited. Please observe basic manners when visiting, such as taking your trash with you and not touching the exhibits.

Matsue Castle is a spot where you can feel history up close, and the combination of the castle and Lake Shinji is an appealing sight.
