Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Maya is a mountain located in Nada Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, with an elevation of approximately 702m, and is part of the Rokko Mountains. It has long been a popular destination for mountain worship and a sacred site, and there are historical sites such as Mayadera Temple near the summit. In particular, the observation point near the summit, Kikuseidai, is famous for its panoramic night view of Kobe and Osaka Bay, so beautiful that it has been dubbed the "10 million dollar night view," and attracts many tourists from both Japan and abroad. As it is relatively easy to access by cable car or ropeway, it is popular with beginner hikers, families, and tourists looking to enjoy the night view.

Highlights

  • Kikuseidai Observatory: Mount Maya's most famous observation deck. It is particularly famous for its panoramic night view from dusk to night, and is a popular date spot.
  • Maya Cable and Maya Ropeway: A tourist route that runs from the base of the mountain to near the summit. The ride itself is a fun sightseeing experience.
  • Maya Temple and Historical Sites: Dotted with ancient temples, shrines and historical sites, you can feel the history as you stroll around.
  • hiking trailsThere are several courses that extend towards Rokko and Nunobiki, allowing you to enjoy the seasonal nature (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, flowers, etc.).
  • Night view and stargazing: Although it is close to the city, it remains a relatively dark environment, and you can enjoy stargazing along with the night view (depending on the weather).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Main access methods (public transportation):

By car:

  • From the Rokko/Kobe area, take the national and prefectural roads to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain. Parking spaces on the mountain are limited, so if the parking lots are full, it is convenient to use public transportation.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If you take the cable car to Kikuseidai and leisurely enjoy the scenery, it will take about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Day hikes (round trip, including easy walks): Half day (3-5 hours), but can be full day (6+ hours) depending on the length of the trail.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, and when the night view is at its best (dusk to night). Since the cable car, ropeway, and parking lot are crowded, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the day.
  • Ropeway operating hours: Please check the official website in advance for operating times (especially for the last outbound train) as they may change depending on the season and inspections. If you are looking to enjoy the night view, be sure to catch the last train.
  • weather: Clouds and fog may obstruct visibility, making it impossible to see the night view or the scenery. It gets cold in winter, so be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the cold.
  • Mountaineering and hiking equipment: There are some unstable areas on the course. Please bring comfortable shoes, drinks, snacks, and rain gear.
  • MannersPlease follow local rules, such as taking your trash home with you, refraining from using fire and making noise, and not damaging natural areas or historical sites. Please check in advance as there may be restrictions on the use of drones.
  • Seasonal caution: In summer there is heat and insects, in autumn there is congestion due to the peak of autumn leaves, and in winter there is the possibility of road closures and changes in operation due to snow and ice.

Other: The opening hours of tourist facilities and stores change depending on the season and day of the week. We recommend checking the latest information (operation and opening status, event information) on official websites and tourist guides before visiting.
