Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Osanbashi Pier (official name: Yokohama Port Osanbashi International Passenger Terminal) is an iconic wharf facility in Yokohama Port. Its history as a wharf dates back to the Meiji period, and it has been used as a port of call for domestic and international passenger ships for many years. The current international passenger terminal underwent a major renovation in the 2000s and is known for its innovative design by a team of foreign architects (Foreign Office Architects (FOA)).

Its distinctive feature is the large, sloping wooden deck on the rooftop, where the streamlined roof reminiscent of a ship and the step-free circulation space gently connect the indoors and outdoors, offering a panoramic view of Yokohama Bay Bridge and the Minato Mirai area. While it functions as a passenger ship terminal, it is also a very attractive "urban rooftop" where residents and tourists can freely stroll, take photos, have picnics, and more.

Highlights

  • Rooftop Deck (Grand Staircase and Slope) - The view from the gently undulating wooden deck is the highlight of Osanbashi Pier. The daytime bay view, sunset, and night view (the night view of Minato Mirai and the illuminated Bay Bridge) are popular.
  • Cruise ship arrival scene - This is a rare spot where you can see cruise ships arriving and departing from port up close. The combination of the large cruise ship and the port town scenery is impressive.
  • Viewpoint and photo spot: The steps and benches on the deck are ideal for taking photos, and it is often used as a location for wedding photography and portraits.
  • Indoor facilities (waiting room and information) - Passengers on board use these for immigration procedures and waiting areas. When used by the general public, these areas are sometimes used as cafes or event spaces.
  • Surrounding scenery: There are many famous spots within walking distance, including Yamashita Park, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Landmark Tower.

    • When a cruise ship calls at the port, certain areas may be off-limits due to restrictions on entry and departure and increased security. Please check the terminal information on your planned arrival date.
  • Manners

    • Eating and drinking on the benches and decks is permitted, but please be considerate of your surroundings when choosing a location.

  • Season and weather
    • As it is by the sea, the wind is strong and the temperature tends to feel lower. Please dress warmly in winter and protect yourself from the sun in summer (with a hat and sunscreen).
