The Niyodo River is a clear stream that represents Kochi Prefecture, and is known nationwide for its crystal clear blue water, known as "Niyodo Blue." Niyodogawa Town is located in the middle to upper reaches of the river, and is an area where the original Tosa landscape remains strong, with its abundant nature, beautiful valleys, and submerged bridges (low-water bridges). The area has supported local life, agriculture, and fishing since ancient times, and is attractive for its seasonally changing scenery and activities such as fishing and canoeing.
Highlights
- Niyodo Blue: When the water quality is just right on a sunny day or after rain, you can see a unique, vibrant blue color. There are many spots with high transparency that are perfect for taking photos.
- Chinkabashi: A low wooden or concrete bridge that sits right at the river's surface. Bridges that can be crossed by car or on foot are scattered around the area, adding an accent to the scenery.
- Riverbank and mountain stream scenery: Enjoy strolls and picnics on the quiet riverbank and the sounds of the mountain stream. It is also a popular fishing spot (for sweetfish, yamame trout, etc.).
- Canoeing/Rafting: There are sections where you can experience guided canoeing/kayak tours and rafting (advance reservations recommended).
- Observation point and promenade: The beauty of the valley and the autumn leaves can be seen from the river observation point and the surrounding promenade. The autumn colors are especially popular.

- Public transportation: Public transportation (trains and buses) to the Niyodogawa area is limited. The nearest major stations are those on the JR Dosan Line heading towards Kochi or Ino, but the nearest station will vary depending on the specific location you are visiting. There are local bus routes, but they are infrequent, so it is important to check in advance.
- Car/Rental Car: Car is the most convenient way to get there. It generally takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and a half from central Kochi (depending on the route and destination). Parking lots may or may not be available at each tourist spot.
- Tours and local guides: For canoeing and rafting, local guide companies often provide transportation and equipment, and if access by public transportation is difficult, joining a tour is convenient.

- Check access information in advance: Public transportation is infrequent, so be sure to check timetables and shuttle/tour information in advance. Parking lots are small, so be prepared for when they are full.
- Safety precautions: Although the river is clear, there are places where the current is fast and deep. Swimming and diving are dangerous. The water can suddenly rise and become muddy, especially after typhoons or heavy rains.
- Protect nature and take your trash with you: Please be sure to take your trash with you and refrain from taking plants or stones. Please follow local rules and entry restrictions.
- Crowds and photography etiquette: Popular "Niyodo Blue" spots can get crowded on weekends and holidays. Please be considerate of those around you, such as not blocking roads or parking spaces for photography and waiting in line.
- Clothing and equipment: Mornings and evenings can be chilly along the river. Wear non-slip shoes when hiking or walking along the riverbank. Always wear safety gear such as a life jacket when participating in activities.
