Furofushi Onsen (Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture)

Aomori Prefecture

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Furofushi Onsen is a hot spring inn (hot spring resort) located along the Sea of Japan in Fukaura Town, western Aomori Prefecture, and its greatest attraction is its "open-air bath that becomes one with the sea." From the open-air bath jutting out from the cliff, you can gaze upon the Sea of Japan stretching out before you, and on clear days, the beautiful sunset sinking into the horizon, offering a unique bathing experience where you feel as if you are directly connected to the sea. The facility is primarily for overnight stays, but also accepts day-trip visitors, and is famous nationwide for its ability to bathe to the sound of the rough waves that can only be heard by the seaside. Guests are provided with ocean-facing rooms, mainly Japanese-style rooms, and can also enjoy cuisine made with local seafood.

Highlights
– An open-air bath built on the edge of a cliff: A dynamic view of the bath blending in with the spray of the waves. It is especially popular at sunset.
– Nighttime bathing and stargazing: You can take a bath while relaxing on the beach and gazing at the stars (weather permitting).
- Ocean views from guest rooms: Some rooms face the sea, allowing you to enjoy the changing scenery in the morning and evening.
- Local seafood cuisine: Kaiseki and set meals using seafood caught that day. Enjoy seasonal seafood.
- Surrounding natural scenery: Using Furofushi Onsen as a base, you can go on nature walks to Shirakami-Sanchi and Lake Juniko.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Gono Line "Fukaura Station" or the nearest station in the area. From Fukaura Station, it is convenient to take a taxi. There are few bus services, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance.
- By car: Use National Route 101 (on the Sea of Japan side). Please be aware of snow accumulation, ice, and road conditions in winter. Parking is available (for guests).
- Pick-up service: Some accommodations offer pick-up services from Fukaura Station or nearby stations. Please check with the accommodation and make a reservation in advance.
- Use the tourist train: The Gono Line is famous for its sea views along the line, so combining this with train access makes the journey itself a sightseeing trip.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- For day trips: Hot spring bathing and meal take approximately 2-3 hours (day trips and hours vary depending on the accommodation).
- For overnight stays: We recommend a two-day, one-night stay. You'll be highly satisfied with the sunset, the open-air bath at night, and the ocean view the next morning. If you plan to take photos or explore the surrounding area (walking around Lake Juniko and parts of Shirakami-Sanchi), we recommend staying at least one night.

Nearby spots
- Juniko Lake (Aoike Pond): This lake has crystal clear water and walking paths, and is accessible by car. You can enjoy different scenery in each season.
– Shirakami-Sanchi (World Heritage Site): Located at the entrance to the World Heritage area, you can enjoy trekking and nature observation (we recommend checking the hiking routes and guides in advance).
– The seaside section of the Gono Line: A section with spectacular views from the train. You can enjoy the coastline scenery on sightseeing trains and local trains.
– Local ports and markets: You can purchase fresh seafood and locally processed products around Fukaura Port.
– Coastal attractions (such as Senjojiki): The coastal landscapes created by rough waves and scenic spots are scattered throughout the area.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Transportation: Public transportation is limited in many areas around Fukaura, especially in winter. Please check the timetable and availability of shuttle services in advance and plan ahead.
- Reservations recommended: We recommend making reservations in advance for overnight stays or day trips, as the park is expected to be crowded during long weekends, summer, autumn foliage season, and the New Year holidays, especially during the sunset time.
- Weather conditions: The open-air baths by the sea may be closed or restricted due to strong winds or high waves. Bathing may be restricted for safety reasons during bad weather, so please check the weather forecast and facility information for the day.
- Bathing etiquette: It is customary to bathe naked in hot springs. Please observe general hot spring etiquette, such as pouring water over the bathtub, washing your body in the washing area before entering, and not occupying the bath for long periods of time.
- Photography: Photography is generally prohibited inside the baths. Please be considerate of the privacy of other bathers when taking photos around the open-air baths.
- Tattoos: Some inns and hot springs may refuse you entry. If this applies to you, please check with the inn in advance.
- Winter clothing and driving: Even on the coast, there is snow, strong winds, and ice in winter, so don't forget to prepare cold weather gear and studless tires.

supplement
Before visiting, please check the official website or contact the accommodation directly to check the latest business hours (closing days, day-trip reception hours, availability of shuttle service) and transportation information. The seasonal scenery (especially the power of sunsets and rough waves) changes significantly depending on when you visit, so we recommend planning your schedule based on the weather.
