Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Takachiho Shrine is an ancient shrine deeply connected to the legends of the descent of the heavenly grandson and the Amanoiwato cave, both of which are recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and is the central shrine of Takachiho Town, known as the setting for mythology. It is said to have been founded in ancient times, and is characterized by its long history, including the shrine forest, approach, and stone steps. The shrine grounds are lined with large trees, and one of its great attractions is the opportunity to experience the world of myth in a tranquil atmosphere. In addition, the Takachiho Kagura (a traditional votive Kagura dance based on Takachiho mythology) held at night is popular with tourists, and being able to watch the Kagura at the shrine is one of its features.

Highlights

  • Shrine and approach: The quiet approach to the shrine and the shrine building exude a sense of history. There are many photo spots and seasonal charms.
  • Kagura Hall and Takachiho KaguraTakachiho Kagura, which takes place at night in the Kagura Hall, is a traditional performing art that recreates the myths of the Kojiki through dance. Tickets are required and the performance lasts approximately one hour.
  • Nature within the temple grounds: You can enjoy the beauty of nature, such as large trees, moss-covered stone steps, seasonal flowers, and autumn leaves.
  • A base for visiting the surrounding mythical sites: There is good access to mythical and scenic spots such as Ama-no-Iwato Shrine and Takachiho Gorge, which are located nearby by car.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: Takachiho Town does not have a train line, so the most common way to get there is by express bus or local bus from the nearest JR station (e.g., Nobeoka Station or a major station heading towards Takachiho). The route and number of buses vary depending on the season and day of the week, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • Express bus/direct bus: There are express and direct buses available from Miyazaki City and Kumamoto. Please check the schedule and travel time in advance.
  • carIt takes about 2 hours from central Miyazaki City on expressways and regular roads, and about 2 to 2.5 hours from Kumamoto (depending on traffic). There is a parking lot near the shrine, making it convenient to visit by car.
  • Tourist attractions:Public transportation is limited, so we recommend planning with plenty of time. If you are planning to watch Kagura, be sure to check your return transportation.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If viewing of Kagura is included: 1.5 to 2 hours (Kagura is approximately 1 hour, including worship and travel time before and after)

Nearby spots

  • Takachiho Gorge: A scenic spot created by cliffs and mountain streams. Boating and walking along the promenade are popular.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The shrine is crowded with worshippers and tourists during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and weekends. Seats for the Kagura performances also fill up quickly, so please make your reservations and come early.
  • traffic: Public transportation is limited, so please check your return transportation options in advance. There may be fewer options late at night.
  • Manners at Shrines:Please observe the proper worship etiquette (purifying your hands, bowing twice, clapping twice, bowing once, etc.), and remain quiet when prayers or ceremonies are being held. Do not enter restricted areas within the temple grounds.
  • photograph: Photography is permitted in most places, but please refrain from using flash or taking pictures without permission during dedication ceremonies, Shinto rituals, and private prayers. There may be restrictions on photography during Kagura and Shinto rituals, so please follow the signs.
  • Season/Clothing:As this is a mountainous area, there is a possibility of snow accumulation and frozen roads in winter, so we recommend wearing warm clothing and non-slip shoes. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket.
  • Environmental Consideration: The temple grounds are sacred places. Please take your trash with you and avoid damaging the surrounding nature and plants.

Note: Please check the local official website or tourist association information in advance for the latest kagura performance schedule, bus times, parking information, etc. Takachiho is a place where nature and mythology come to life, so we recommend taking your time and exploring the area at your own pace.
