Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Japan Mint (Kita-ku, Osaka City) is home to the Osaka branch of the Japan Mint, which manufactures Japanese currency. The Japan Mint itself was established during the Meiji period and has been responsible for producing coins and issuing commemorative coins for many years. The Mint's grounds retain their sturdy modern architecture and historical atmosphere, and are also known as a cultural space open to the public.

The cherry blossom tunnel is particularly famous. Every year from early to mid-April, the rows of cherry trees on the grounds are open to the public, allowing visitors to enjoy the approximately 560-meter-long cherry blossom tunnel and the wide variety of cherry blossoms. The tunnel is widely loved as a local spring tradition.

Highlights

  • Cherry Blossom Pass: Commonly known as the "Mint Bureau Cherry Blossoms." There are many varieties with different colors and blooming patterns, and some years the cherry blossoms are lit up at night (the dates and times vary from year to year).
  • Japan Mint Exhibition and Museum: Exhibits of coins and medals, introductions to the manufacturing process, etc. You may be able to view exhibits on the history of coins and commemorative coins for free.
  • Modern architecture and site landscape: There are old office buildings, gates, and other structures that give off the atmosphere of the Meiji and Taisho periods (you can enjoy observing and photographing the exteriors).
  • Limited-time events and exhibitions: Special exhibitions and open days may be scheduled outside of cherry blossom season, so it is best to check official announcements.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • JR Osaka Loop Line: Within walking distance from Tenma Station/Sakuranomiya Station (approximately 5-10 minutes walk from Tenma Station).
  • Osaka Metro (Subway) Sakaisuji Line: About 5 minutes walk from Ogimachi Station.
  • It is also within walking distance from Minamimorimachi and Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, making it an easy location to combine with a stroll along Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street (Tenma).
  • If you are coming by car, please use the nearby paid parking lots. We recommend using public transportation during the cherry blossom viewing period, as it can be crowded and there may be traffic restrictions.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • If you want to walk slowly through the cherry blossom path: 30 minutes to 1 hour (varies depending on the crowds).
  • If you also visit exhibition facilities (such as the Mint Museum): Add 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • The total trip, including strolling around the surrounding area (Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street, Ogimachi Park, etc.), should take approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Osaka Tenmangu Shrine: A shrine dedicated to academic and business success, where festivals and seasonal events are held.
  • Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street: One of the longest shopping streets in Japan, with plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds during the cherry blossom viewing period: Many people visit every year. There are times when the passageways become narrow, so please consider ways to avoid crowds (such as going at a different time, visiting early in the morning, or on a weekday).
  • Eating, drinking, smoking and standing: While passing through, stopping to eat or drink, talking loudly, and smoking may be prohibited or restricted. Please follow the instructions of staff and posted notices.
  • Consideration for flowers and trees: Breaking cherry blossom branches or picking flowers is strictly prohibited. Photography is permitted, but please be considerate and not disturb other visitors.
  • Restrictions on tours of manufacturing areas: The Mint's production lines and some facilities are open to the public and photography is restricted. If you wish to tour the factory, please make a reservation in advance or check official information.
  • Check the official information: Opening hours, the period and time of the Cherry Blossom Walk, and event information change every year, so please check the official website of the Japan Mint for the latest information before visiting.

When visiting, please use public transportation, be considerate of others, and check the official website for the latest information (opening dates, times, admission procedures, etc.).
