Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Toyokawa Inari (official name: Myogonji Temple, commonly known as Toyokawakaku) is an ancient temple in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, known for its unique form of worship that combines the Inari faith of Shinto shrines with Buddhism. Since ancient times, it has attracted the faith of common people as a place of prayer for prosperous business, safety of the home, and bountiful harvests, and the temple grounds are home to a constant stream of worshippers, with red torii gates and numerous fox statues (Inari's attendants). The temple gate and main hall have been constructed and restored to their current appearance, and festivals and prayers are held there throughout the year. The town's temple town (along the approach to the temple) is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants, making it a fun place to stroll after visiting the temple.

Highlights

  • Main Hall and Great Main Hall: The center of worship. You can see the majestic interior and the rituals taking place inside the hall (please follow the signs for viewing instructions).
  • Red torii gates and a group of fox statues: The various fox statues of different sizes lined up on the approach and within the grounds, as well as the group of dedicated fox statues, create a unique landscape. It's a great spot for taking photos.
  • The temple town on the approach to the shrine: lined with souvenir shops, inari sushi and Japanese sweets stores. Try the local specialty, inari sushi.
  • Festivals and Annual Events: The Hatsuuma Festival and New Year's first shrine visits are particularly popular. There are also days when special prayers and goma prayers are held.
  • Gardens and Sub-shrines: There are small shrines and gardens in every corner of the temple grounds, and you'll make new discoveries if you take your time exploring.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Meitetsu (Nagoya Railroad) Toyokawa Inari Station...The entrance to the shrine is right outside the station. It's about a 1-2 minute walk.
  • By JR: JR Toyokawa Station...About a 5-10 minute walk from the station. You can also walk along the approach to the shrine.
  • By car: Approximately 10 minutes by car from Toyokawa IC on the Tomei Expressway (depending on road conditions). There is a paid parking lot around the temple grounds, but it is often full on festival days and during the New Year holidays.
  • Bus: You may be able to take a local bus or a city loop bus from Toyokawa Station. Please check the schedule and route in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: Around 30 minutes (only visit to the main hall and walking along the approach)
  • Leisurely sightseeing and dining: 1-2 hours (main hall, strolling around the grounds, dining and shopping in the temple town)
  • During festivals and special viewings: Approximately half a day (taking into account crowds and waiting times for participating in events)

Nearby spots

  • Dining and souvenir shops in the temple town: After worshiping, you can enjoy the famous inari sushi and Japanese sweets.
  • Toyokawa city: There are many places to stroll around, such as museums, parks, and local gourmet restaurants within the city (if you have time, we also recommend sightseeing in the city).
  • Toyohashi direction: If you are traveling by car, you can extend your trip to neighboring Toyohashi city and combine sightseeing around Toyohashi Station, the amusement park, and the seaside.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded during New Year's visits to shrines, the Hatsuuma Festival, and long weekends. However, it's easier to get around if you use public transportation or come during peak hours (early morning).
  • Manners: This is a religious facility. Please follow the rules regarding photography in the worship hall and restricted areas. Please observe basic worship etiquette, such as not shouting and taking your trash with you (or leaving it in the designated area).
  • Photography: Photography is permitted in most areas of the temple grounds, but photography may be restricted during memorial services or festivals. Please check the notices and staff instructions before taking photos.
  • Protection from the cold and heat: As worship is mostly outdoors, please dress appropriately for the season and be sure to stay hydrated. It may be difficult to worship during the rainy season or when a typhoon is approaching.
  • Parking: Parking lots are expected to be crowded or full on festival days and during tourist seasons. If you are coming by car, please arrive early or consider using public transportation.

Note: Before visiting, please check the official website or local information for visiting hours, event schedules, and transportation information. We wish you a pleasant visit.
