Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Toro Ruins, located in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, are the remains of a representative Yayoi period settlement. Numerous excavated artifacts, including remains of dwellings and raised-floor storehouses that hint at life in the era when rice cultivation was established, moats and rice paddies, and pottery and wooden products, have been discovered, making the site a fascinating place to learn about Yayoi period lifestyles and agricultural techniques through actual artifacts and reconstructed buildings. The site was discovered and excavated in the mid-20th century, and is preserved and open to the public as a site of great archaeological importance. The actual artifacts unearthed during the excavation are on display at the Toro Museum (Toro Ruins Museum), and touring the site alongside the reconstructed settlement provides a three-dimensional understanding of Yayoi period society and lifestyles.
