Zuiganji Temple is a representative Zen temple in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, and an ancient temple deeply connected to the scenery of the port town of Matsushima. Legend has it that it was founded by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) in the Heian period, and later many of the current buildings were constructed under the patronage of Date Masamune, a feudal lord from the Sengoku to Edo periods. Highlights include the early Edo period architecture, lavish decorations, sliding door and partition paintings by the Kano school, and sculptures inside the halls, making this a temple of great historical and cultural value.

Another major attraction is the location, with the islands of Matsushima Bay as a backdrop, allowing visitors to enjoy the view of the sea and islands while worshiping at the shrine.

• Gardens and Borrowed SceneryThe view of Matsushima Bay from the temple grounds and corridors is exceptional. The scenery of the sea and islands changes with the seasons, and the combination of the plants in the temple grounds is beautiful.
• Combined visit with the surrounding ancient temples: Zuiganji Temple is the central temple of Matsushima, and there are many other attractions nearby, such as Godaido Hall, Kanrantei, and Entsuin Temple, so you can gain a deeper understanding by visiting them all.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

• By trainFrom Sendai Station, take the JR Senseki Line (or the direct Senseki Tohoku Line/Senseki Line) to Matsushima Coast (Matsushima-Kaigan Station) in about 30-45 minutes. From the station, it is also possible to walk (about 5-15 minutes, depending on the route and entrance/exit).
• By car: From the Tohoku Expressway or Sendai area, take the Sanriku Expressway. There are paid parking lots and tourist parking lots scattered around Matsushima, but they may fill up during peak seasons, so we recommend using public transportation.
• Buses and sightseeing boats: You can also travel around the area by taking the local bus that connects the center of Sendai city and tourist spots, or by taking a pleasure boat on Matsushima Bay. Zuiganji Temple is close to the tourist hub of Matsushima Bay, so it's a good idea to combine it with taking in the sights from the pleasure boats and seeing the scenery from the boat.

• Including a tour of the hall and treasure museum: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes
• If you want to take your time touring the surrounding temples, such as Godaido and Entsuin Temple, it will take 2-3 hours (or half a day).

• Godaido: A chapel built on a small island in Matsushima Bay. It is famous for its view jutting out over the sea.
• Entsuin Temple: A popular temple with gardens, autumn foliage, and seasonal illuminations. Within walking distance of Zuiganji Temple.
• Matsushima Bay Sightseeing Cruise (Pleasure Boat): Enjoy the scenery on a pleasure boat that tours the islands of Matsushima.
• Zuiganji Temple Approach/Matsushima Town Souvenir Street: A street lined with seafood, local gourmet and souvenir shops.
• Kanrantei: A spot with a teahouse and historical architecture that blends in with the Matsushima landscape.

• Photography Restrictions: In some cases, photography of the halls and treasures may be prohibited. Please follow the instructions of the staff and signs within the temple grounds.
• Visiting hours and fees: Visiting hours and admission fees may change depending on the season and events, so please check the official website or tourist information in advance.
• congestion: It tends to get crowded during Golden Week, autumn foliage season, consecutive holidays, and weekends. If you visit early in the morning, you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
• Clothing and walking: There are many stone steps and uneven grounds within the temple grounds, which can become slippery on rainy days. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please observe proper etiquette, such as remaining quiet inside the temple and eating and drinking only in designated areas.
• Seasonal cautionIn winter, road closures and viewing restrictions may occur due to snow and ice. There may also be days when the sea breeze is strong, so please be sure to dress warmly and take care not to let your hat fly away.
