overview

Kumamoto Castle is an ancient castle built by Kato Kiyomasa, and its magnificent stone walls and elegant castle tower are its highlights. It was built over 400 years ago and was damaged in the 2016 earthquake, but has undergone extensive restoration and restoration, and visitors can learn about its history through the collections and restored exhibits inside. It is also a popular spot for its cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and nighttime illuminations.

access

It's about a 15-minute tram ride from JR Kumamoto Station and gets off at "Kumamoto Castle/City Hall." By car, it's about a 30-minute drive from the Kumamoto Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. There is a paid parking lot and a tourist information center nearby.

Estimated stay

The tour takes 1-2 hours, but if you want to take your time to see the castle tower, Ninomaru, and exhibits, it's a good idea to allow about half a day.
