Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Odori Park is a wide green belt that runs east to west through the center of Sapporo, Hokkaido, and can be called the city's "living room." It was developed as part of a fire prevention line and urban planning during the Meiji era when Sapporo was being developed, and is now a popular park for both locals and tourists, stretching approximately 1.5 km east to west and divided into multiple blocks (chome). It is decorated with flower beds, fountains, and sculptures that change with the seasons, and its main features include a view of the Sapporo TV Tower on the eastern end, and its role as an event venue.

Highlights

  • Sapporo TV Tower (east end): From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Odori Park and Sapporo city. It's also a great spot for taking photos.
  • Flower beds, fountains and sculpturesEach block is dotted with themed flower beds, seasonal flowers, distinctive fountains, and artworks.
  • Large seasonal eventsA variety of events are held throughout the year, including the Sapporo Snow Festival (giant snow sculptures) in winter, the Lilac Festival in spring, and the Sapporo Summer Festival (beer garden) and Yosakoi Soran Festival in summer.
  • Walks and picnics: It is a wide park with many benches, making it a popular place for local residents to relax. It is flat and relatively easy to navigate with strollers and wheelchairs.
  • Night view and illuminations: Lighting up and white illuminations are used mainly in winter, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • subwayThe nearest station is Odori Station (Subway Namboku Line, Tozai Line, Toho Line). It is directly connected to the center of the park. To get to the eastern end, take the bus from Sapporo Station or Odori Station, or walk from Odori Station.
  • JR: About a 10-15 minute walk from JR Sapporo Station (head north to the northern end of Odori Park). You can get there without getting wet by using the underground passage.
  • Susukino areaThe southern end is within walking distance of Susukino Station, making it convenient for traveling north and south to explore the surrounding area.
  • Car/Taxi:Parking is limited due to the central location. We recommend using nearby paid parking lots or public transportation. When getting on or off a taxi, be sure to pay attention to designated areas and road conditions.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Light stroll: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Spend time exploring the flower beds and sculptures: 1-2 hours

  • Pets:Please observe basic etiquette, such as keeping your pet on a leash and cleaning up after it. There may be restrictions on entry to certain areas.
  • Drone Event Regulations:During events and at night, there may be restrictions on entry, photography, and drone flying. Please follow the signs and instructions of staff.
  • safety:The areas around the pond and fountains can be slippery, so please keep an eye on children.
