Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Daibosatsu is a mountain located in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, with an elevation of approximately 2,057 meters, and is the main peak of the Daibosatsu mountain range. Part of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, it is characterized by its gentle ridgeline and excellent views. Since ancient times, there has been a mountain pass (Daibosatsu Pass) connecting Koshu (Kai) and Chichibu, and it is known as a setting for mountain climbing, hiking, and literature. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and the Okuchichibu mountains. Each season is captivating, with alpine plants in spring, autumn leaves in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter.

Highlights

  • View: A magnificent panorama of Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, the Yatsugatake Mountains and more from the summit and ridgeline.
  • Around Daibosatsu Pass: A historic mountain pass road, atmospheric mountain huts, and rest areas.
  • Ridgeline hiking: A gentle, easy-to-walk trail that is popular with beginners to intermediate hikers.
  • Alpine plants and nature: flowers blooming from spring to summer, autumn leaves, and snowy winter scenery.
  • Photo spot: Mount Fuji and its ridgeline, lit by the early morning and evening light.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: The nearest stations are Enzan Station and Katsunuma-budokyo Station on the JR Chuo Main Line. The most common route is to take a local bus or private shuttle from the station to the trailhead (around Kamihigawa Pass or Daibosatsu Pass). Bus services are infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: Take the Chuo Expressway from Katsunuma IC or Kofu Minami IC and take the national and prefectural roads to the trailhead. There is a parking lot near Kamihigawa Pass, and many people start their climb from there. Parking is limited, so we recommend arriving early on weekends and holidays.
  • Taxi: You can also take a taxi from the station to the trailhead (be aware of the number of taxis and the cost).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Kamihigawa Pass (car/bus arrival point) → Summit (round trip): Approx. 3-5 hours including breaks. The outbound trip takes about 1.5-2 hours.
  • Circular course from the starting point of Daibosatsu Pass: Depending on the course, it takes half a day to a full day (approximately 3 to 6 hours).
  • Day hikes are common, but be sure to plan ahead and allow plenty of time depending on the weather and your physical strength.

Nearby spots

  • Erinji Temple (Koshu City) - Famous as a temple associated with Takeda Shingen.
  • Katsunuma Winery and Vineyards - A tourist destination where you can enjoy wine and fruit picking.
  • Kofu and Takeda Shrine area - A tour that can be combined with historical walks and hot springs.
  • Okuchichibu Mountains and Hiking Courses - We also recommend taking a walk in the surrounding mountains.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The parking lot and buses at the trailhead are crowded during autumn (when the leaves change color) and on weekends. Please consider leaving early in the morning or using the trail on a weekday.
  • Clothing and equipment: The summit is at a high altitude and temperatures are often low. Be sure to bring warm clothing, rain gear, comfortable shoes, and plenty of drinks and snacks.
  • Winter climbing: There is snow and ice, so you will need snow mountain gear such as crampons and ice axes, as well as experience. Be careful of sudden changes in weather.
  • Avoid getting lost and manage your physical strength: Visibility along the ridgeline can be poor depending on the weather. Be sure to bring a map, GPS, and a charged phone, and plan your itinerary accordingly.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: Always take your trash with you. Collecting plants and feeding animals are prohibited. Stay on the hiking trails.
  • Mobile phone signals: Depending on the location, you may be out of range. Please confirm emergency contact methods in advance.

(Reference) Before setting off, be sure to check the latest traffic information, weather information, and trail conditions. Safety comes first, and enjoy the seasonal scenery.
