Nakano Broadway (Nakano Ward, Tokyo)

■ Overview (history, characteristics, appeal)
Nakano Broadway is a commercial complex that opened in 1966, located at the northern end of Nakano Sun Mall, a shopping district in Nakano, Tokyo. When it first opened, it was a general commercial facility selling clothing and household goods, but from the 1970s to the 1990s, it became home to a collection of specialty shops selling secondhand manga, figurines, and retro toys, and is now known both domestically and internationally as a mecca for "otaku culture." Its greatest appeal is the fact that it is lined with small specialty shops across multiple floors, where you can find rare manga, doujinshi, anime goods, idol goods, secondhand clothing, antique toys, and more. Each store has its own unique character, making it fun to hunt for bargains.

■Highlights
- Mandarake and other second-hand manga and figure specialty stores: They have a wide selection of rare books, limited edition figures, and retro toys. A must-see for collectors.
- Retro toy, soft vinyl, and tin toy store: A rare selection of Showa-era toys and overseas miniature cars.
- Doujinshi, idol, and voice actor goods specialty stores: There are many stores selling doujin works and concert goods.
- Gachagacha & Capsule Toy Corner: Enjoy a wide variety of capsule toys.
- Small galleries and exhibition spaces: Sometimes they hold special exhibitions related to anime and art.
– On the first floor, on the Sun Mall side, there are restaurants and general shops, making it a convenient place to take a break during your stroll.

■Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Chuo Line/Soubu Line "Nakano Station" North Exit (approximately 3-5 minutes on foot). The entrance is on your right just after passing through the Sun Mall shopping arcade.
- From the city center: Approximately 4-6 minutes by JR Chuo Line Rapid from Shinjuku Station (depending on the line and type of train). Accessible from Tokyo Station and Shibuya with one transfer.
- By subway: Get off at Nakano Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line (a few minutes' walk from the exit).
- If you are coming by car, please use the nearby parking lots (public transportation is recommended as they are often full during busy times).

■ Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Quick look: about 1 hour (if you just want to go around 1-2 floors)
- Carefully searching for hobby items: 2-4 hours (comparing, trying on, and purchasing from multiple stores)
- Collector shopping and event participation: Half a day to a full day (if you take your time to look for bargains, you'll likely stay for a long time)

■ Nearby spots
- Nakano Sun Mall Shopping Street: An arcade street leading to Broadway. There are many restaurants and general shops.
– Nakano Zero (a cultural facility in Nakano Ward): Concerts and events are sometimes held here.
– Nakano Central Park (Nakano Shiki no Mori Park): A green space where you can take a walk to refresh your mind.
- Koenji (1 station): An area where you can enjoy vintage clothing stores, live music venues, and good old shopping streets.
- Shinjuku area (neighboring station): Easy access to shopping and tourist spots.

■Points to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Weekday mornings to early afternoons are relatively quiet. Weekends, public holidays, Golden Week, and the New Year's holiday period are extremely crowded.
- Narrow aisles and stores: Many areas within stores and shared aisles are narrow, making it difficult to move strollers or large luggage. Please be considerate of others when it is crowded.
- Photography etiquette: Many stores prohibit taking photos inside the store or of products, so be sure to check with store staff before taking photos.
– Age verification/adult products: Adult books and merchandise may require age verification and/or ID.
- Payment: Some small stores only accept cash. Credit card acceptance varies by store, so it's a good idea to bring some cash with you.
- Language: With the increasing number of tourists, store clerks may not be able to speak English. It is recommended to use a notepad or translation app to make purchases or ask questions.
– Customs and tax exemption: Foreign currency and tax exemption policies vary by store, so if you wish to use tax exemption, please check in advance and bring your passport.
- Check the product condition: Second-hand and vintage items vary in condition. We recommend that you only purchase if you are satisfied with the item and check the return policy.

Tips for enjoying the place: It's more efficient to decide on a purpose (figure hunting, doujinshi hunting, retro exploration, etc.). Research the stores you're interested in and check their opening hours beforehand to minimize wasted time. Enjoy the "treasure hunt" feeling of finding a bargain.
