Susa Hornfels (Susa, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture)

2025 12/18
Yamaguchi Prefecture
December 18, 2025

■ Overview (history, characteristics, appeal)
Susa Hornfels is a rare metamorphic rock landscape exposed on the coast of the Susa district of Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Igneous rocks such as basalt came into contact with the surrounding sedimentary rocks and were metamorphosed at high temperatures to form hard hornfels, and its exposed cross section, eroded by waves and wind, is characterized by its fan-shaped and striped patterns. The contrast between the dark, hard rock surface and the whitish rock layers that spread along the coast, and the unique landscape created by the complex joints and stratifications, are highly valuable from a geological perspective and are known as a spectacular, photogenic spot.

■Highlights
– Rock surface patterns: The fine granular and plate-like texture unique to hornfels and the difference in color from the surrounding sedimentary rocks create band-like patterns and fault-like lines.
- Coastal cliff shape: A dynamic landscape created by steep cliffs, steps, and depressions carved by the waves.
- Changes in scenery due to tide levels: The visible areas and atmosphere change with high and low tide, and rocks that are usually hidden may appear at low tide.
- Photo spot: The patterns stand out in the slanting light of early morning and evening, and the colors of the sea and sky are especially beautiful.
- Seasonal scenery: The scenery changes with the seasons, with the blue of the sea, the color of the sky, and the clear air of winter.

■Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Sanin Main Line "Susa Station" (local station). Public transportation from the station is limited, so it is convenient to use a taxi or rental car.
- By car: Access from within Yamaguchi Prefecture via national and prefectural roads. Approximately 40-60 minutes by car from central Hagi (varies depending on road conditions and route).
- Parking: There may be small parking spaces around the site, but please follow the parking rules in the area if they are full.
- Public transportation: Bus routes tend to be very infrequent, so be sure to check the schedule in advance. Taking a taxi is the safest option.

■ Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Observation only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including photography and close-up observation)
- If you want to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the area and take photos: 1-2 hours
– Day trip plan combining with surrounding tourist attractions: half a day to full day

■ Nearby spots
– Hagi City's castle town, Shoka Sonjuku, and Shoin Shrine: The center of Hagi where you can enjoy a historical stroll (historic site related to the World Heritage Site).
– Aomijima (Aomijima Cruise): A spot where you can enjoy the ocean scenery from a boat (a popular tourist destination in Hagi City).
– Fishing ports and seafood shops around Susa: There are many places where you can enjoy local seafood and meals.
– Other: Nature walks and small fishing villages along the coastline.

■Points to note (crowds, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Watch your step: The rocks are slippery and can be especially dangerous when the waves are high. Wet rocks and moss-covered areas can cause slip-and-fall accidents. We recommend wearing non-slip footwear.
- Check the tide and weather: The visibility changes between low and high tide. Do not enter when the sea is rough. Be careful of wave spray and splashes on windy days.
- No entry and dangerous areas: Do not enter areas marked with signs or ropes. Always act with safety as your first priority.
- Manners: Breaking or collecting rocks or geological formations is prohibited in order to protect the environment. Please be sure to take any trash with you and be considerate of local residents and fishing activities.
– Parking and toilets: Facilities are often limited, so we recommend making arrangements in advance for toilets and food and drink.
- Seasonal precautions: In summer, the sun is strong, so take precautions against the heat, and in winter, the sea breeze is cold, so take precautions against the cold. If you are visiting early in the morning or evening for photography purposes, be careful when moving around or returning home during the dark hours.

(Note) Although this is a geologically interesting place, excavation and collection may be prohibited as a general rule. Please check the latest information on local information boards and tourist information centers before visiting.

Please use the above information to enjoy the natural beauty of Susa Hornfels safely and with consideration for your surroundings.
