Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is a group of commercial facilities that utilizes the historic red brick buildings that line the bay area of Hakodate, Hokkaido. The red brick buildings, which were originally built as warehouses for port logistics, have been preserved and renovated to become tourist spots with shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries, tourist information facilities, and more. With its seaside location and classic red brick exterior, it is also a popular spot for daytime strolls and photo opportunities of the evening and illuminated scenery. Seasonal events (such as Christmas illuminations and markets) are also part of the attractions.

Highlights

  • Exterior of the Red Brick Warehouses: The historic red bricks and the view of the harbor make for a great photo opportunity. We recommend visiting at dusk or when the buildings are lit up at night.
  • Shops and souvenirs: There are many shops selling Hokkaido seafood, souvenirs exclusive to Hakodate, and general goods. You can find local specialties here.
  • Food: Seafood, sweets, and cafes are available, allowing you to enjoy the flavors of Hakodate for lunch or a light meal.
  • Experiences and crafts: There are often glass workshops, galleries featuring local artists, and experience corners where you can try your hand at making things.
  • Event space: Bustling with events such as seasonal markets, concerts, and Christmas fantasies.
  • Walking path/seaside view: You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade along the warehouses while looking out at the harbor.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By train/streetcar: About a 15-20 minute walk from Hakodate Station. If you are using the Hakodate City Tram (streetcar), get off at either Jujigai or Suehirocho tram stop and walk for about 5-10 minutes.
  • From the airport: From Hakodate Airport, it takes about 20-30 minutes by airport shuttle bus or taxi (depending on traffic conditions).
  • By car: Accessible from the main road. Paid parking available around the site (limited spaces available, so may be full).
  • Cruise ships: Due to the increased number of tourists visiting on days when large cruise ships call, passenger information and access may be enhanced.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30 minutes to 1 hour (just taking photos of the exterior and taking a quick look around the shop)
  • Time spent including meals and shopping: 1.5 to 3 hours
  • If combining with sightseeing in the surrounding area (such as a stroll around Motomachi or Mt. Hakodate): Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Hakodate Morning Market: A morning market where you can enjoy fresh seafood and seafood bowls (accessible by foot or bus).
  • Motomachi district: A walking spot with a group of churches and historical buildings (within walking distance).
  • Mount Hakodate (Ropeway): Famous for its night view. Accessing it from the bay area is also a popular route for viewing the night view.
  • Goryokaku: A star-shaped Western-style castle park. Accessible by car, tram, or bus.
  • Yunokawa Onsen: Relax after a long day of travel by staying overnight or taking a day trip to the hot springs.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area is extremely crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, during the summer tourist season, cruise port days, Christmas, and other events. Taking photos and moving around may take time.
  • Opening hours: Shops and restaurants have different opening hours, and some close earlier than others. Please check the official website or store information before visiting.
  • Winter precautions: Hakodate experiences snow and frozen roads in winter. Non-slip shoes and warm clothing are necessary, and the sea breeze can make the temperature feel lower.
  • Parking: Nearby parking lots tend to fill up during the tourist season, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Manners: As this is a historical building, please be considerate to preserve it, do not enter any restricted areas, and avoid taking photos that may obstruct pedestrians.
  • Payment: Some stores only accept cash. It's a good idea to check in advance whether credit cards or electronic payments are accepted.

Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is a spot where you can enjoy the food and shopping unique to Hakodate while taking in the historical scenery and seaside atmosphere. We recommend visiting in the morning and afternoon for shopping and strolling, and in the evening to enjoy the illuminated area and night view.
