Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kurumayama Kogen is a highland resort in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, spanning from the foot of Mt. Kurumayama (approximately 1,925m above sea level) to its summit. Its appeal lies in its 360-degree panoramic views, including the majestic Yatsugatake mountain range, and, on clear days, even Mt. Fuji, the Central Alps, and the Southern Alps. From spring to autumn, the plateau is filled with blooming flowers, and the area can be enjoyed throughout the year as a summer resort, a summer foliage spot in autumn, and a ski resort in winter. It is also a key point on the scenic road known as the Venus Line, making it a great base for driving and cycling.

- View from the summit of Mt. Kurumayama: The view from near the summit is outstanding. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji, Mt. Yatsugatake, and the mountain ranges to the north and south.
- Highland flower fields: In the summer, there are spots where you can see lupines, day lilies, herbs, lavender, and more (the best time to see the flowers varies from year to year).
- Lift and walking trails: The lift takes you up to the summit in a short amount of time, making it ideal for light hiking or plateau walks.
- Starry sky, sunrise, and sea of clouds: Because the air is clear, you can sometimes observe the starry sky and see the sea of clouds in the early morning.
- Winter activities: Kurumayama Kogen Ski Resort offers a wide range of slopes, snowshoeing, and sledding.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: The nearest station is Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line. From Chino Station, you can access the facility by bus or car.
- Bus: Buses (including seasonal resort buses) run from Chino Station and Kami-Suwa Station to Lake Shirakaba and Kurumayama Plateau. The number of buses and schedules change depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.
- By car: Approx. 40-60 minutes from the Chuo Expressway, Suwa IC (or Okaya IC) via the Venus Line. It takes about 3 hours by car from Tokyo, and about 3 hours from Nagoya (depending on traffic conditions). There is a parking lot on the plateau, but it may be full during peak seasons.
- Tours and direct buses: Direct buses and sightseeing tours may operate during peak seasons in summer and winter and on consecutive holidays. Please check in advance.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short-term sightseeing: 1-2 hours for the round trip to the observation spot and lift.
- Half-day tour: 3-4 hours, including a stroll around the summit, viewing the flower fields, and visiting the surrounding art museums and cafes.
- Full-day stay: A full day including hiking, driving around the area (Venus Line), and bathing in the hot springs.
- Accommodation: If you want to relax on the plateau, enjoy stargazing, early morning walks, and sightseeing in the surrounding area (Tateshina, Lake Shirakaba, etc.), we recommend staying at least one night.

- Lake Shirakaba: Close to Kurumayama Plateau, you can enjoy boating, walking, and a lakeside cafe.
- Megamiko: A quiet lake and surrounding walking trails.
- Tateshina Plateau: A highland resort where you can enjoy hot springs, art museums, and forest walks.
- Kirigamine: A plateau on par with Kurumayama, known as a famous spot for viewing the Japanese buttercup.
- Suwa (Lake Suwa and Suwa Taisha Shrine): Accessible by car from Kurumayama. Hot springs and historical sites.
- Yatsugatake area: Hiking, highland leisure activities, and tourist spots within day trip distance such as Kiyosato.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Weather changes: The weather on the plateau can change suddenly and temperatures are low. Please bring warm clothing and rain gear even in summer.
- UV rays and altitude sickness: The high altitude means the sun's rays are strong. Bring a hat and sunscreen, and do not push yourself if you are feeling unwell (dizziness, headache).
- Traffic and Crowds: Roads, parking lots, and lifts will be crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and winter holidays. We recommend leaving early, using public transportation, and making reservations in advance.
- Protecting flowers and nature: The flowers of the plateau are precious. Please do not enter the restricted areas or plants within the ropes, and do not pick flowers.
- Hiking/walking equipment: If you are hiking, don't forget the basics, such as non-slip shoes, drinks, a map, and a phone charger.
- Pets and livestock: There may be ranches and pastures nearby. Please observe good manners, such as keeping pets on a leash and not letting them run loose or feeding them.
- Check business hours: The opening hours of lifts, buses, accommodations, and ski resorts vary seasonally. Be sure to check the latest information on the official website or transportation company before visiting.
