Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hoheikyo Dam is an arch-type concrete dam located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, surrounded by lush forests and valleys. The facility was constructed for flood control, water supply, and power generation purposes, and the scenery created by the deep emerald green waters of the dam lake and the surrounding mountains changes with the seasons, making it a highly popular tourist destination. The scenery is particularly spectacular during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, attracting many photography enthusiasts and hikers. There is also a day-trip hot spring facility nearby, making it an attractive place to combine a relaxing visit with sightseeing.

Highlights

  • View of the dam body: The view of the dam lake and valley from the top of the dam body is impressive and is a popular photo spot.
  • Emerald green lake surface: The beautiful water surface changes color depending on the weather and season, making for an impressive and tranquil sight.
  • Nearby walking paths and observation points: Walking paths and observation decks are available, allowing you to enjoy nature on short walks (availability may vary depending on the season and maintenance status).
  • Autumn leaves (Autumn): This is the best season for tourists to visit every year. The contrast between the dam and the autumn leaves is stunning.
  • Nearby day-trip hot springs: You can soothe your fatigue in a hot spring while touring the dam, such as Hoheikyo Onsen.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Access is mainly by public transport and private car. Public transport is limited, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance.

  • Train/Bus: Take a bus bound for Jozankei from Makomanai Station on the Subway Namboku Line or from Makomanai, or a local bus from Sapporo city bound for Jozankei/Hoheikyo (the journey takes longer due to transfers and the frequency of buses). Walk from the nearest bus stop. For detailed routes and timetables, please check with the bus company or Sapporo City's transportation information.
  • By car: Approximately 40-70 minutes from central Sapporo via national and prefectural roads (depending on traffic conditions). Parking is available, making it convenient to access by car. Winter tires are essential as the roads can freeze over in winter.
  • Sightseeing bus tours: These may be included in seasonal day trips. Please be aware of meeting points and times.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30-45 minutes (just a quick look at the dam body)
  • A leisurely stroll and photography: 1.5 to 2 hours (if walking around the observation deck and surrounding promenades)
  • Relaxing with hot springs and meals: Half a day to a full day (when combining with day trips to hot springs and nearby tourist spots)

Nearby spots

  • Hoheikyo Onsen: A day-trip hot spring facility near the dam. It also has a restaurant and a foot bath, making it the perfect place to take a break after sightseeing.
  • Jozankei Onsen (Jozankei): Famous as a hot spring town, you can enjoy lodging, strolling, and sightseeing in the hot spring town.
  • Sapporo Art Park: A spot where you can enjoy outdoor sculptures and art exhibitions (access by car is recommended).
  • Jozankei Dam and Valley Walking Trail: A nature walking spot within a short drive. Ideal for hiking and nature observation.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Public transportation is infrequent: Buses are limited, especially on weekdays and in the early morning and evening hours, so please check the schedule in advance. Also, be sure to pay attention to the time of your return trip.
  • Crowds: Parking lots and observation areas can get crowded during the autumn foliage season and on weekends. We recommend leaving early to avoid traffic jams and full parking lots.
  • Safety measures: There are slippery areas near the embankment and promenade. Please observe basic safety measures such as staying within the fenced areas to prevent falls and keeping an eye on children.
  • Climate and clothing: As this is a mountainous area, there are large temperature differences and sudden rain or cold snaps are possible. Please bring comfortable walking shoes, warm clothing, and rain gear. In winter, roads can freeze and snow can accumulate, so winter gear (such as studless tires) is essential.
  • Prohibited acts and etiquette: Please be considerate of the natural environment and other visitors by not entering restricted areas, always taking your trash with you or disposing of it in designated areas, and avoiding noise and nuisances. Drone flying may be restricted, so please check in advance.
  • Check facility information: Tour times, vehicle traffic restrictions, event information, etc. may change depending on the season or year. Please check the latest information on the official website or on-site guide before visiting.

*Please check the latest information on official websites and transportation companies before heading out.
