Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands is a botanical garden that protects and exhibits mainly wetland plants that spread across the Hakone plateau. It features marshes, small ridges, boardwalks, and other features that make use of Hakone's natural environment, allowing visitors to observe wetland plants in a state close to their natural state throughout the seasons. With rare mountain wildflowers, plants unique to wetlands, and seasonal wildflower colonies to be seen, it is also popular as a place for nature observation, photography, and learning. The garden's design respects the natural topography, and its appeal lies in the opportunity to experience Hakone's rich ecosystem while strolling around.

Highlights

  • Flowers of the Four Seasons: Different flowers bloom with each season, such as alpine plants and wildflowers in spring (violets, day primroses, etc.), waterside flowers in early summer, and spike-shaped flowers in autumn.
  • Wetlands and boardwalks: Boardwalks and promenades have been constructed to make it easy to observe the wetlands, allowing visitors to observe the ecology of wetland plants up close.
  • Bird and insect observation: There are also spots to observe insects that gather in wetlands and wild birds that hunt them. Having a telephoto lens or binoculars will make your enjoyment even greater.
  • Photo spot: The scenery with the natural forest and boardwalk in the background is popular with photography enthusiasts. The light in the morning and evening is beautiful.
  • Seasonal events and explanations: You can deepen your knowledge of plants through guided tours, explanatory panels, and seasonal exhibits (check official information for event status).

It is accessible by both public transport and car. Please check the latest schedules and operating information in advance.
