Sarusawa Pond is a circular pond in the center of Nara City, adjacent to Kofuku-ji Temple and Nara Park. It has long been a beloved landmark that shapes the city's landscape, and is particularly famous for the "mirror" view of Kofuku-ji Temple's five-story pagoda reflected in the pond. When the pagoda is illuminated at night, the still waters create a beautiful reflection, making it a popular photography spot for camera enthusiasts and tourists. Historically, it has taken many years to reach its current state, and the surrounding area is home to teahouses and walking paths.

- Five-story pagoda reflected in the water: When viewed from the south side of the pond, the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple is reflected in the water, creating a fantastical sight, especially at dusk and when lit up at night.
- Seasonal scenery: Cherry blossoms (spring), fresh greenery (early summer), autumn leaves (autumn), etc. The scenery changes with each season. Early in the morning there are fewer people around, making it easier to take quiet photos.
- Walking path and benches: There is an easy walking path around the pond, where you can take a break and enjoy the scenery. You may also spot turtles and wild birds.
- Night view: During events and special periods, the surrounding temples, shrines, and pagodas are lit up, creating a different atmosphere than during the day.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Kintetsu Nara Station (approximately 3-5 minutes on foot) / JR Nara Station (approximately 15-20 minutes on foot, or 5-10 minutes by bus).
- On foot: Head east from Kintetsu Nara Station and head towards Nara Park and Kofuku-ji Temple. Access from the station is very convenient, making it a great base for touring Nara's major tourist attractions.
- Bus: Nara Kotsu city routes and sightseeing loop buses are available. The nearest bus stop is just a few minutes' walk away.
- Cars and Parking: Parking is limited as the area is in the city center. We recommend using public transportation. If you must use a car, please use a nearby paid parking lot.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short visit: 15-30 minutes (for photography and walking around the pond).
- A leisurely stroll: About 1 hour (including a quick tour of nearby Kofuku-ji Temple and Nara Park).
- Thorough sightseeing: Half a day to a full day (including visiting nearby spots such as Todaiji Temple, Nara National Museum, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine).

- Kofuku-ji Temple: An ancient temple located across from Sarusawa Pond. Its five-story pagoda and National Treasure Museum are must-sees.
- Nara Park: A vast park where you can interact with deer. Perfect for strolling and picnics.
- Todaiji Temple: World-famous temple with the Great Buddha Hall. Walking distance.
- Nara National Museum: Exhibits mainly Buddhist art. Close to Kofuku-ji Temple.
- Naramachi (Nara Town): An area where traditional townhouses remain, dotted with cafes and souvenir shops.
- Wakakusayama: A viewing spot overlooking seasonal mountain burning and Nara city.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The park is particularly crowded with tourists during the cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week, autumn foliage season, and the New Year holidays. During these busy times, you may be restricted from using tripods and may have to wait in line to take photos.
- Manners: The area around the pond is a public place. Please observe basic manners such as taking your trash with you, not making noise, and remaining quiet on the grounds of temples and shrines. Also, please do not enter the pond or throw anything into the water.
- About the deer: Deer from the nearby Nara Park may appear in the area. Although they are cute, they may approach suddenly, so please do not show them food or carelessly hand them food (only feed them commercially available deer crackers).
- Footing and Safety: The edge of the pond has stone pavement and steps in some places. Please be careful as it can become slippery after rain or when frozen in winter.
- Seasonal precautions: There may be a lot of mosquitoes and other insects in the summer. In the winter, it gets very cold and frost or thin ice may be visible on the surface of the pond. Please do not walk on the ice.
Sarusawa Pond is easily accessible and is a spot where you can enjoy the picturesque scenery even in a short time. If you visit it together with Kofuku-ji Temple and Nara Park, you can efficiently enjoy Nara's unique history and natural scenery.
