Sunosaki Lighthouse (Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sunosaki Lighthouse is a white lighthouse standing along the coast of Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, and is a landmark that watches over navigation in the direction of Tateyama Bay and Tokyo Bay. The lighthouse was erected to ensure the safety of coastal shipping routes, and is also popular as a spot where you can enjoy the beautiful seascape along with the surrounding cliffs and coastline. On particularly clear days, you can see the Pacific Ocean and Tateyama Bay, and on clear winter days, you can even see Mount Fuji in the distance.

Highlights

  • The contrast between the sea and the lighthouse: The white lighthouse, blue sea, and cliff scenery make a perfect photo spot.
  • Sunset: Located on the coastline facing west, the sunset is beautiful and can be photographed with the lighthouse.
  • Views and scenic walks: The promenades and small parks around the lighthouse offer great views, making it a great place to take a leisurely stroll.
  • Observe the changes in the sea: You can observe the waves and the ebb and flow of the tide, and you can also see people fishing near the rocks.
  • Distant views on a clear day: If conditions are good, you may be able to see the opposite shore and distant mountains (including Mt. Fuji).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Tateyama Station on the JR Uchibo Line.
  • Bus: Local buses (regional routes) depart from Tateyama Station for the Susaki area. Times and operating days vary seasonally, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • Car/Rental Car: Approximately 15-25 minutes by car from Tateyama Station (depending on traffic). Access is via the coastal road. There may be parking spaces around the lighthouse, but please note that the number of spaces may be limited.
  • Walking: As it is far from the center of Tateyama, visiting on foot alone will require time and energy. It is more convenient to use public transportation or a car.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short sightseeing: 20-30 minutes (photography around the lighthouse and enjoying the view)
  • A leisurely stroll: about 1 hour (taking photos and taking breaks while walking along the surrounding promenades and coastline)
  • If you are also touring the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (a plan that also includes visiting nearby tourist spots and beaches)

Nearby spots

  • Tateyama Castle (Joyama Park): A historical park in Tateyama City with great views, it's easy to visit along with the lighthouse.
  • Beaches and coastlines (around Tateyama Bay): Enjoy playing in the sea or taking a walk depending on the season.
  • Other lighthouses and coastal spots in Boso: We also recommend taking a half-day to full-day drive around the surrounding lighthouses and capes.
  • Local Restaurants and Fish Markets: There are many shops offering fresh seafood and local cuisine.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Surrounding roads and parking lots may be congested on weekends, public holidays, during the summer beach season, and during consecutive holidays. Please consider arriving early and using public transportation.
  • Lighthouse Access Restrictions: As with many lighthouses, access to the interior of the tower may be restricted. Please follow the instructions on the fences and signs.
  • Parking and Toilets: The parking lot is small and has limited spaces. There may be few public toilets or shops, so it's a good idea to prepare drinks and other necessities in advance.
  • Protect the natural environment: Please be sure to take your trash with you, do not trample on vegetation, and do not enter areas where you are not allowed.
  • Weather and sea breeze: The wind can be strong along the coast. Don't forget to take measures against the cold and wind, especially in winter or stormy weather. Also, the promenades and rocky areas can be slippery, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Safety: Be careful of falls and waves near rocky areas and cliffs. Check the tide and wave conditions, and always act with safety as your number one priority.

For peace of mind, please check the latest information (transportation, parking, and availability) from Tateyama City, the tourist information center, and bus companies before visiting. Enjoy the beautiful seascape and lighthouse scenery.
