Shima Mediterranean Village (Shima City, Mie Prefecture)

TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shima Mediterranean Village is a resort facility built facing Ago Bay in Shima City, Mie Prefecture, and is characterized by its architecture and seaside scenery inspired by the white streets of the Mediterranean. With its cobblestone paths, white walls and blue roofs, and terraces facing the sea, it is popular for its atmosphere reminiscent of overseas resorts, and offers sightseeing, accommodation, restaurants, shops, weddings, and more. The sunsets and night illuminations (seasonal illuminations) are also an attraction, and the village is known as a popular photo spot.

Highlights

  • Coastal walking path and photo spot: The white-based townscape and the seascape of Ago Bay are a great place for strolling and taking photos.
  • Sunset view: Watching the sun sink into the horizon is a popular time of day. You can watch it from the terrace seats or on the beach.
  • Restaurants and cafes: There are restaurants that serve dishes made with local seafood and Mediterranean-style dishes, and you can enjoy your meal while looking out at the sea (opening hours and closing days vary by restaurant).
  • Accommodation (villas, cottages, etc.): Enjoy the night view and morning seascape at your leisure during your stay at the resort. Room types and facilities vary depending on the facility.
  • Events and Seasonal Activities: Seasonal markets, illuminations, wedding events, etc. are sometimes held.
  • Experience programs and marine activities: Depending on the season, cruises and experience events may be held (please check in advance).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: Ugata Station on the Kintetsu Shima Line is the nearest major station.
  • Travel from the station: The approximate travel time by taxi from Ugata Station is 15 to 25 minutes. Shuttle buses and local buses may operate depending on the season, so be sure to check the schedule and operating status in advance.
  • Access by car: Most access is via public roads in the Ise-Shima area. During the tourist season, surrounding roads and parking lots can become congested, so we recommend leaving well in advance. Please check the facility information for availability and fees for parking.
  • From afar: From Nagoya or Osaka, the most common way to get there is by expressway or Kintetsu Limited Express train (travel time varies greatly depending on the departure point and means of transportation).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: If you plan to mainly explore, eat, and take photos, the recommended time is about 1.5 to 3 hours.
  • Relaxed stay: If you plan to stay overnight and include dinner at the restaurant, events at the hotel, and sightseeing in the area, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy yourself.

Nearby spots

  • Ago Bay: A beautiful inlet on the ria coastline where you can enjoy sightseeing boats and the scenery.
  • Kashikojima: A tourist destination with sightseeing boats and resort facilities, it is an easy area to visit in conjunction with other sightseeing in the surrounding area.
  • Shima Spain Village (Parque Espana): A theme park popular with families (accessible by car or public transportation).
  • Toba/Ise area: Popular tourist spots such as Toba Aquarium and Ise Shrine are within a day trip, so we recommend creating a round-trip plan.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded on weekends, long weekends, summer holidays, and when events are held. Parking lots and restaurants may fill up, so if possible, make reservations in advance and leave early.
  • Business hours and holidays: Business hours and holidays vary depending on the store or facility. Please check the official website or call before visiting for the latest information.
  • Transportation restrictions: There are times and seasons when public transportation is less frequent, so it is a good idea to check your means of transportation back home (the last train or bus).
  • Clothing and cold weather: The sea breeze can be strong and can make you feel cold. It can get chilly in the evenings and at night, so please bring something to wear over your clothes.
  • Manners: In areas where there are many people taking photos with the scenery as the background, please be considerate to other customers and do not disturb them. Also, there may be designated non-smoking areas and smoking areas within the facility.
  • Pets and Barrier-Free Access: Restrictions on bringing pets and the extent of barrier-free access vary by facility. Please check in advance to see what facilities are required and available.
  • Check official information: The latest facility information (events, temporary closures, transportation information, etc.) is updated regularly on the official website and social media. We recommend checking before visiting.

(Note) The travel times, operation status, and facilities mentioned in the text are estimates only. For accurate information on business hours, access methods, fees, etc., please check the Shima Mediterranean Village official website or contact the facility directly.
