Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tenkaiho is an observation point overlooking the sea in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is known for its panoramic view of the Kujuku Islands. The panoramic view of the scattered islands and intricate ria coastline from the high ground is popular as one of the most representative "beautiful landscapes of Japan," and on clear days you can see all the way to the distant islands. The surrounding area is part of Saikai National Park, and is popular with photography enthusiasts and tourists alike, with observation decks, walking paths, and promenades where you can enjoy seasonal flowers.

Highlights

  • Panorama of Kujukushima: The greatest attraction of Tenkaiho is the unique scenery of islands of various sizes floating on the sea surface. It is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Rape blossoms (spring): Around March and April each year, rape blossoms bloom all over the slope, creating a stunning contrast between their yellow color and the sea. Many people visit to take photos.
  • Seasonal flowers and walking paths: A walking path has been established where you can enjoy the nature of the four seasons, such as rape blossoms in spring, greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves. You can relax and enjoy the scenery from the benches and observation deck.
  • Observation facilities and information: There are information boards and observation points along the promenade where you can read explanations of the island names and formations while observing.
  • Night view/starry sky: On days with little light pollution, you can enjoy stargazing (subject to weather conditions).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: JR Sasebo Station (Sasebo city center).
  • Public transportation: Local buses and tourist buses operate from Sasebo City, but the number of buses is limited, so please check the schedule and operating days in advance. There may also be special buses during the tourist season.
  • Taxi: Approximately 20-30 minutes by taxi from Sasebo Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • By car: Accessible via prefectural and city roads. Parking is available (whether it's free or paid varies depending on the time of year and the facility, so please check before you arrive), but it may be full during busy times.
  • Walking: Due to elevation differences, some areas are difficult to access on foot. We recommend walking along the local footpaths.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Just to take in the scenery: 30-45 minutes
  • If you want to enjoy photography and walking: 1 to 2 hours
  • Enjoy seasonal sights such as rape blossoms. ・Combining with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Kujukushima Sightseeing Boat: This island-hopping cruise allows you to see the island scenery up close from the sea.
  • Sasebo City (Sasebo Burger): Return to the city center to enjoy the local gourmet Sasebo Burger and shopping.
  • Yumiharidake Observatory: A viewing spot from another hilltop where you can see Sasebo city and the surrounding sea area.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the peak season for rapeseed flowers, long holidays (Golden Week), and weekend evenings. Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday will give you a more relaxed experience.
  • Parking: Parking lots can fill up, so consider taking public transportation during peak times or leaving early.
  • Clothing and shoes: The observation deck and walking trails have hills and stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. The sea breeze can be strong and cold, so be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the wind and cold.
  • Safety: There are cliffs and steep slopes in some areas, so please be mindful of safety by not entering restricted areas and keeping an eye on children.
  • Garbage and Nature Conservation: Please be sure to take home any garbage you can and be mindful not to damage nature or vegetation.
  • Drone use: Due to regulations and safety concerns, drone flights may require prior confirmation and permission from local governments and facilities. Please refrain from flying drones without permission.
  • Weather: Visibility at sea is easily affected by the weather, and there are days when visibility is poor due to fog or rain. It is best to check the weather forecast before heading out.

Tenkaiho is a place where you can enjoy the overwhelming seascape even in a short time. It changes with the seasons, so it's a good idea to choose a time to visit depending on your purpose (photography, cherry blossom viewing, or landscape appreciation).
