Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain, boasting an elevation of 3,776m, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013. It is a symbol of Japan that can be enjoyed in all four seasons, and many domestic and international travelers visit for mountain climbing and sightseeing in the surrounding area. The views from the Fuji Five Lakes, Lake Kawaguchi, and the tea fields on the Shizuoka side are particularly popular, making it an attractive spot for photography enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Climbing Mt. Fuji and experiencing the sunrise during the summer mountain season (July to September)
  • View from the Fuji Five Lakes (Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Yamanaka, etc.)
  • "Mount Fuji + Japanese scenery" from Arakurayama Sengen Park and tea fields
  • Spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and clear air in winter

access

From Tokyo, on the Yamanashi side, take the JR Chuo Main Line to Otsuki Station and then the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station. On the Shizuoka side, it is common to take a local bus from JR Tokaido Shinkansen's Shin-Fuji Station or Mishima Station. For mountain climbing, there are direct buses to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station and the Fujinomiyaguchi 5th Station.

Estimated stay

The standard length of time for mountain climbing is two days and one night, but if you are just sightseeing or taking photos, half a day to a full day will be enough.

Nearby spots

  • Lake Kawaguchi (Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture) — A popular spot for photographing Mount Fuji
  • Fuji-Q Highland (Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture) — Famous for its thrilling rides
  • Shiraito Falls (Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture) — A famous waterfall created by underground waters from Mount Fuji

Points to note

As the mountain is at a high altitude, it is necessary to take measures against altitude sickness. The mountain is very crowded during the summer season, so be sure to make a reservation in advance and plan your time accordingly. Climbing is prohibited in winter, so we recommend viewing the mountain from the base. Weather conditions are changeable, so it is essential to prepare warm clothing and rain gear.
