Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Okuoikojo Station is an unmanned station on the Oigawa Railway Ikawa Line in Kawanehon Town, Haibara District, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is characterized by its unusual location on a bridge over a dam lake (Lake Okuoi). The Ikawa Line was originally built for transporting goods related to flood control and power plant construction, but the line, which runs alongside deep mountain valleys and dam lakes, has also become popular as a tourist route, and Okuoikojo Station is known as a "tourist" station built specifically for its scenic beauty.

The platform faces the railway bridge over the lake, so its greatest attraction is that you can get a close-up view of the deep green and emerald-colored lake below, as well as the surrounding mountains. It is also a famous photo spot, and many people visit in search of the spectacular views, especially during the seasons of fresh greenery, deep greenery, and autumn leaves.

Highlights

  • Platform over the lake: From the platform on the bridge, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lake and mountains. Combined with the train, you can take picturesque photos.
  • Seasonal scenery: The vibrant green of new leaves (around May), the deep green of summer, and the colorful leaves of autumn (around November) are attractive. The morning mist creates a fantastical view.
  • Photo spot (observation deck): There is a viewing spot on the opposite bank a little distance from the station, or from an observation space where you can take pictures of the whole view (there is an observation deck within walking distance).
  • The Oigawa Railway's travel atmosphere: The Ikawa Line itself is a charming local line that runs through the mountains, so you can enjoy it at your leisure by combining it with a train journey.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

General directions by public transport:

  • First, take the JR Tokaido Main Line towards Kanaya. From Kanaya Station, transfer to the Oigawa Railway Main Line, which connects to the Ikawa Line at Senzu Station.
  • Take the Ikawa Line from Senzu Station and get off at Okuoikojo Station (an unmanned station). Please check the timetable in advance as there are few trains on the Ikawa Line.

Directions by car:

  • Head towards Kawane Town via the prefectural and national roads. There are only a limited number of large public parking lots around the station, but there may be parking spaces or roadside parking near the observation deck near the station. Please follow the local signs when parking.

Please note: The Ikawa Line operates a limited number of trains, and depending on the timetable, you may have to wait longer at stations, or the next train may not arrive right after you arrive at the station. Please check the timetable and connections in advance before traveling.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Photography and viewing only: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes (including boarding and disembarking the train and traveling to and from the observation deck).
  • If you include the observation deck and a stroll around the area, it will take about 1-2 hours.
  • If you combine it with the Ikawa Line and sightseeing in the surrounding area (such as Sumata Gorge), it will take half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Sumatakyo and Yume no Tsuribashi: This hot spring resort is famous for its emerald green gorge and suspension bridge. It can be reached by car and is a popular tourist spot.
  • Oigawa Railway (steam locomotives, main line area): Steam locomotives run between Senzu and Shin-Kanaya, making it popular with railway enthusiasts.
  • Senzu area: The starting point of the Ikawa Line, with restaurants and a tourist information center.
  • Nearby dams and gorge walking trails: There are many areas where you can enjoy the beauty of the valley and hot springs.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Number of trains and connections: The Ikawa Line has a limited number of trains, so be sure to check the train schedule and wait times at stations.
  • Unmanned stations and limited facilities: Toilets, shops, and waiting rooms may not be available. We recommend bringing your own food, drinks, and cold weather gear.
  • Busy times: The observation deck and platform are crowded during autumn, on weekends, and during consecutive holidays. Please be considerate of other tourists when taking photos.
  • Safety Measures: The platform is on a bridge and can be windy at times. Please be careful of your feet and falling from the fences, and it is strictly prohibited to enter the tracks. When taking photos, please prioritize the safety of those around you.
  • Seasonal clothing and walking instructions: As this is a mountainous area, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. Some areas can become slippery when it rains, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Environmental Conservation and Manners: Please take your trash with you, maintain a quiet environment, and be considerate of local residents and other visitors.

Note: Before visiting, it is a good idea to check the latest information (such as service status, temporary closures, and road closures) on the Oigawa Railway's official website or Kawane Town's tourist information.
