Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tennoji Zoo is an urban zoo located in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, within Tennoji Park. It is a historic facility that opened in the Taisho era and has long been loved by local residents. The zoo is divided into several zones, and its greatest appeal is being able to observe animals while experiencing the changing seasons, even in the city. The zoo is a mix of historic architecture and traditional exhibits, as well as recently renovated viewing facilities, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.

Highlights

  • The exhibits are organized into zones that make it easy to navigate: You can observe animals by theme, such as an area inspired by the African grasslands and a corner that recreates the tropical forests of Asia.
  • Popular animals: There are many popular large and medium-sized animals on display, including lions, giraffes, elephants, and monkeys (the animals on display may change depending on the season and their health).
  • Experiences and observation points for children: There are many explanatory panels, observation windows, and viewing spaces where you can get a relatively close look, making it a fun place for parents and children to enjoy together.
  • Seasonal events and changing exhibits: There are seasonal events such as summer and spring events, and night events (only in certain years), so it's a good idea to check the official information.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest stations: JR Tennoji Station, Osaka Metro Midosuji Line/Tanimachi Line Tennoji Station, and Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line Osaka Abenobashi Station are all within walking distance.
  • Walking distance: It takes about 5-10 minutes to walk from JR or subway Tennoji Station to the Tennoji Park entrance. There are signs directing you to the park from the station.
  • Access by car: There are paid parking lots in the area, but they tend to be crowded on weekends and holidays, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • Bus: Osaka City buses and other buses stop around Tennoji. Access varies depending on the route, so please check the route map in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Quick walking tour: 1-1.5 hours (to quickly explore the main exhibits).
  • If you take your time to observe, read the explanations, and take breaks, it will take about 2-3 hours. If you are traveling with your family or mainly taking photos, we recommend a half-day plan.
  • If you plan to visit the nearby facilities (Tennoji Park, Abeno Harukas, etc.), you should plan for a half-day to full-day itinerary.

Nearby spots

  • Tennoji Park (Tenshiba): With a large lawn and rest areas, it is perfect for strolling and picnics.
  • Abeno Harukas: A large complex with an observation deck, shopping, and restaurants. On a clear day, the view from the observation deck is recommended.
  • Shitennoji Temple: An ancient temple perfect for a historical stroll. Accessible on foot.
  • Shinsekai/Tsutenkaku Area: Enjoy the retro townscape and gourmet food such as kushikatsu. A popular spot for families and tourists.
  • Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts and other cultural facilities within the park allow you to enjoy both culture and nature.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowd Information: The number of visitors increases on weekends, national holidays, spring break, Golden Week, and summer vacation. The park is relatively quiet immediately after opening in the morning and early afternoon.
  • Animal health and weather: Exhibits may be temporarily restricted due to bad weather or animal health management. Please check the official website or notices posted in the zoo for the latest information.
  • Manners: Shouting while walking, taking flash photos, and climbing over fences are prohibited within the park. Please dispose of trash in the designated area and smoke in the designated area.
  • Strollers/Wheelchairs: The roads are relatively well maintained, but there are some steps and slopes, so it is a good idea to check the barrier-free information in the park's guide beforehand.
  • Clothing and heat precautions: In the summer, the sun is strong and it gets hot, so please bring a hat, drinks, and sun protection. In the winter, there are many outdoor exhibits, so please dress warmly.
  • Food and Drink: There may be places selling snacks within the park, but if it is crowded, please consider eating outside the park or at nearby restaurants.

Before visiting, please check the official website for the latest information on opening hours, closing days, admission fees, event information, etc. Have a great visit!
