Toi Gold Mine is a tourist facility located in Toi, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a spot where you can enjoy document exhibits, tours of the mine, and gold panning experiences, centered around the remains of a former gold mine. The mine prospered from the Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho periods due to its gold and silver production, and is characterized by its fusion of museum elements that convey the region's mining culture and technology to the present day, and tourist-oriented experience elements. Through a tour course that recreates the atmosphere of a mine, displays of actual mining tools and materials, and explanations of blacksmithing and mining, you can get a firsthand feel for Japan's mining history and the difficulties and excitement of mining.

- Mine tour (recreated tunnel): You can walk through the tunnels that recreate the atmosphere of an actual mine. It's cool, and you can experience the working environment of mining and what it was like back then.
- Exhibits include mining tools, historical documents, photo panels, etc. Learn about the evolution of mining technology and local history.
- Gold panning experience: A hands-on program that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The gold you collect can be taken home as a souvenir (fee applies).
- Exhibition of gold bars and mining products: You can see the actual exhibits and replicas up close, and get a real feel for the weight and brilliance of gold.
- Observation spots and strolls around the area: The area around the facility offers views of Suruga Bay, and is known for its beautiful sunsets. You can also expand your sightseeing options by visiting Toi Onsen town and the coast.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- By car: Access via the Tomei Expressway → Numazu IC or the Shin-Tomei Expressway → Izu direction. Located in the Toi area on the west side of the Izu Peninsula, there is a parking lot. From Tokyo, it takes about 2-3 hours depending on road conditions.
- Train + Bus: Take the JR Tokaido Line via Atami, Numazu, Mishima, etc., then transfer to a bus or train bound for Izu to get to Toi. In particular, Izu Hakone Bus and Tokai Bus run to Toi from Shuzenji Station and the Mishima/Numazu area (it is recommended to check the route and schedule in advance).
- Direct bus: Depending on the season, express buses and direct buses may operate from Tokyo (Shinjuku, etc.) to Toi. Please check official information or the information of each bus company for availability and schedules.
- Note: Some public transport routes have limited service, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance, especially if you are returning home on a holiday or in the evening.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Facility tour only: 1-1.5 hours (tour inside the mine + viewing exhibits)
- Tour + gold panning and souvenir purchase: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Sightseeing in the surrounding area (including hot springs and coastal walks): Half a day to a full day. We also recommend staying overnight and enjoying the area at your own pace.
Nearby spots
- Toi Onsen: A hot spring town overlooking the sea. With many day-trip bathing facilities and inns, it's an ideal base for sightseeing.
- Toi Beach/Sunset Spot: The sunset over Suruga Bay is beautiful, making it a great place for strolling or relaxing on the beach.
- Sightseeing spots in Nishiizu: Scenic spots in the Nishiizu area, such as Dogashima and Koganezaki. We recommend going on a drive around these spots.
- Local restaurants: There are many restaurants where you can enjoy fresh local fish and seafood dishes, focusing on seafood.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Golden Week, summer vacation, and long weekends can be busy, and parking and entry can take time. If possible, try to visit on a weekday or earlier in the day.
- Clothing and safety for the mine tour: While the mine is well-lit and cool, it may be dark and have uneven surfaces. Please wear comfortable shoes and keep an eye on children. There are some areas where wheelchairs and strollers are not accessible, so please check with the facility in advance if you require wheelchairs or strollers.
- Gold panning experience: Since you will be handling water and sand, it is useful to bring clothes and a towel that you don't mind getting wet. Please follow the rules for handling the gold and tools you collect.
- Seasonal precautions: In summer, the sun is strong, so take precautions against heatstroke if you spend a lot of time outdoors. In winter, the sea breeze makes the temperature feel lower, so dress warmly. Depending on the weather, the view may be poor.
- Environment and Manners: Follow instructions when touching exhibits and equipment, and abide by rules in areas where photography is prohibited. The surrounding area is a tourist destination and hot spring resort, so please be considerate of local residents (noise, litter, etc.).
