Verny Park (Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Verny Park is an urban park located on the coast of Yokosuka City, named after the French engineer François-Léonce Verny (Mr. Verny). Mr. Verny made a major contribution to the establishment and modernization of the Yokosuka Iron Works (Yokosuka Shipyard) during the Meiji period, and monuments and memorials commemorating him can be found within the park.

Its distinctive features include a seaside promenade overlooking Tokyo Bay, flower beds planted with plane trees and seasonal flowers (especially roses and cherry blossoms), and a "ship-viewing spot" from which you can view Self-Defense Force ships and US naval vessels anchored at sea. It is a popular strolling spot where you can feel the gentle sea breeze in the middle of the city.

• Seaside Promenade: Benches and walkways are provided, allowing you to take a stroll or relax on one of the benches. The night view of the ships and factories is also beautiful.
• Verny Monument and Memorial Monument: There is a monument and information board commemorating Mr. Verny, and you can learn about the history of Yokosuka's modernization.
• Seasonal flowers (cherry blossoms, roses, etc.): You can enjoy flowers in each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring and roses in early summer. Many visitors come to see the roses during their peak season.
• Ship-watching spot: Maritime Self-Defense Force, US military, and merchant ships are sometimes anchored here, allowing you to observe ships coming in and out up close (please do not enter bases or reserved areas).
• Night view and illuminations: From dusk to night, the lights of the industrial areas and ships, as well as the illuminations in the park, are beautiful and romantic.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

• Nearest station (access by foot or bus): Accessible from Yokosuka Station on the JR Yokosuka Line, Shioiri Station and Yokosuka Chuo Station on the Keikyu Line. There are routes to get there on foot or by bus from each station (the required walking time from each station is approximately 10 to 20 minutes).
• Bus: Yokosuka City buses and local buses operate, and you can get off at bus stops along the coast. Please check the routes and schedules in advance.
• By car: There are temporary parking lots and pay parking lots nearby, but they are often full due to limited space. We recommend using public transportation.

• Short walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour (enough to walk around the coast and take photos)
• Relaxed viewing and rest: 1-2 hours (including viewing the flowers, relaxing on a bench, and visiting a nearby cafe)
• Combining with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (including sightseeing in Mikasa Park, Dobuita Street, Sarushima, etc.)

• Mikasa Park (Mikasa Memorial Ship): Enjoy the view of the battleship Mikasa, the plaza, and the seaside.
• Dobuita Street (Yokosuka's food and drink district): A shopping street that still retains the influence of US military culture and is popular for finding gourmet food and souvenirs.
• Sarushima (an uninhabited island accessible by boat): A tourist destination for exploring nature and historical remains. Ferries depart from near Nojima and Mikasa Park.
• Yokosuka Museum of Art (travel time may vary depending on location): A facility where you can enjoy art appreciation.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

• Crowds: The park is crowded during the cherry blossom and rose viewing seasons, Golden Week, and weekends. It may be difficult to take photos or use the benches.
• Manners: The park is a public space. Please be sure to take your trash with you or to the designated area. Please refrain from smoking outside of designated areas. Keep pets on a leash and take their droppings home with you.
• Access Restrictions: There are Self-Defense Force and U.S. military facilities and wharves on the sea side, and some areas are off-limits. Please follow the fences and signs and do not enter without permission.
• Safety: The coastline can be windy on some days. Please be mindful of your footing and take care not to fall. Take particular care if you are traveling with small children.
• Weather and Seasonal Precautions: Be prepared for pollen and crowds during the cherry blossom viewing season in spring, the sun and heat in summer, and the cold wind in winter. Temperatures drop at night.
