Utoro Onsen is a hot spring resort in the Utoro district of Shari town, located on the west side of the Shiretoko Peninsula, and is known as the gateway to Shiretoko National Park (a World Heritage Site). Hot spring inns and accommodation facilities line the coast, and one of its great attractions is being able to bathe while enjoying the view of the Sea of Okhotsk and the natural scenery that changes with the seasons. In particular, during the winter drift ice season, you can get a close-up view of the drift ice, and from spring to autumn it is used as a base for observing Shiretoko's natural beauty and wildlife. Historically, it developed as a fishing town, and as tourism became more central, it was developed as a hot spring resort.

• Drift ice watching (winter): From January to April, when the drift ice comes ashore, you can enjoy it from the sea or on the shore. Sightseeing boats and coastal walks are popular.
• Shiretoko Sightseeing Boat/Sea Cruise: A sightseeing boat departing from Utoro Port allows you to see cliffs, seabirds, seals, and if you're lucky, even whales from the sea.
• Shiretoko Five Lakes Trekking: Located a short drive away, you can observe the marshes and forests from nature walks and elevated boardwalks (be aware of access and rules).
• Wildlife viewing: There is a chance of encountering animals in their natural habitat, such as brown bears, red foxes, and Hokkaido deer (safety precautions required).

• Nearest major train station: Abashiri Station (JR Abashiri Station) - From Abashiri, it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by bus or car to get to Utoro.
• Air: Memanbetsu Airport - Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport by rental car, local bus, or shuttle.
• Expressway/Car: Approximately 5-6 hours by car from Sapporo (depending on distance and road conditions). Renting a car is convenient, but be careful of freezing and snow in winter.
• Local buses and tourist buses: Local buses bound for Utoro run from Abashiri and Memanbetsu Airports, as well as seasonal tourist buses. However, the number of buses is limited, so it's important to check in advance.
• Tourist boats: Utoro Port is the departure and arrival point for tourist boats. If you are taking a boat, you can access the port on foot or by car.

• Hot spring bathing only: 1-2 hours (day use with overnight stay also possible, varies by facility).
• Day trip (touring the Utoro area): Half a day to a full day (combining a sightseeing boat trip and exploring the surrounding area).
• Relax and enjoy sightseeing in Shiretoko: 1-2 nights recommended (2 nights or more is recommended if you want to enjoy the Shiretoko Five Lakes, sightseeing boats, trekking, and local cuisine).

• Transportation restrictions: Public transportation is limited, so be sure to check timetables and operating conditions in advance. There is a possibility of delays or cancellations due to frozen roads and snowstorms in winter.
• Nature conservation rules: Shiretoko is a World Heritage Site, and preserving the natural environment is important. Please follow the rules, such as staying on designated walking paths and boardwalks, taking your trash home with you, and not feeding wild animals.
• Danger from wild animals such as brown bears: When walking, travel in groups and use bells or whistles to let others know of your presence. Avoid traveling alone or entering the forest at night. Make sure you know what to do in case of an encounter.
• Safety of sightseeing boats and canoes: Cruises may be canceled or suspended due to sea conditions or weather. Please dress warmly and windproof.
• Natural hot springs such as Kamuiwakka Falls: Some areas are dangerous and entry is restricted. Avoid reckless exploration and prioritize safety.
