Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Chausuyama Plateau (Toyone Village, Kitashitara District, Aichi Prefecture) is a highland resort area centered around Mt. Chausu (approximately 1,415m above sea level), and is one of the highest altitude tourist destinations in Aichi Prefecture. Its abundant nature, vast grasslands, and seasonal scenery make it a charming place to visit year-round, with spring moss phlox, summer escapism and highland hiking, autumn foliage, and winter skiing and snow play. Popular with families and outdoor enthusiasts, the panoramic views from observation points and stargazing are also highlights.
Highlights
- Shibazakura Hill (Spring)The Shibazakura flowers that bloom all over the slope are spectacular. They are usually at their best from late April to mid-May, and many tourists visit during this period.
- Observation deck/panoramic view: A nearly 360-degree panoramic view from the plateau. On a clear day, you can see the distant mountains and the lush foothills.
- Ski resorts and snow play (winter): There are slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers, and plenty of family activities such as making snowmen and sledding.
- Hiking trails and plateau walksFrom short walks to day hikes, you can enjoy seasonal alpine plants and bird watching.
- Stargazing/Night View: As there are few large city lights around, it is also recommended as a stargazing spot (depending on the weather).
- Recreational facilities: There are facilities for families to relax in, such as an observation deck, playground equipment, a shop, and a snack bar (opening hours vary depending on the season and day of the week).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Car (most convenient)
From central Nagoya: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours via expressways and local roads (varies depending on road conditions and route).
From Toyohashi/Shinjo: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
There are several parking lots on the plateau side, but they may be full during the peak season and require a fee, so it is best to arrive early. - public transportation
Trains and buses are infrequent, and direct public transportation from the nearest station to the plateau is limited. If using public transportation, be sure to check the route, timetable, and seasonal operation in advance (such as special buses during the Shibazakura Festival and ski season). If using public transportation, it is often more practical to use a taxi or shuttle bus from the station. - Seasonal Shuttle Service
During the spring moss phlox blooming season and the winter ski season, special shuttles and direct buses may operate from nearby major stations and roadside stations. Please check the official website or Toyone Village tourist information.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: The area is extremely crowded during the peak season for moss phlox, on weekends, during Golden Week, and during the ski season. Parking lots and restaurants tend to be crowded, so it's best to leave early in the morning or at a different time.
- Weather and clothing:The altitude is high and there is a large temperature difference. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so please bring a jacket and warm clothing. It is also a good idea to bring rain gear and non-slip shoes.
- Road conditions and winter precautions:Roads in mountainous areas tend to freeze and snow accumulate in winter. In winter, it is necessary to prepare studless tires and chains and check road surface information.
- Nature Conservation and MannersTo protect the flora and wildlife of the plateau, please observe basic etiquette, such as not entering restricted areas and always taking your trash with you.
- Public transportation: There are few train and bus services, so if you are traveling by public transport, please check the timetable in advance and be aware of the last bus.
- Information confirmation: Please check the official website or Toyone Village tourist information in advance for information on events (such as the Shibazakura Festival), facility opening status, special bus services, and weather warnings.
