Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Neko no Hosomichi is the collective name for the narrow slopes and alleys around Senkoji Park in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is known for the cats that live here and there in the town, as well as the cat-themed objects and signs scattered throughout. Originally a residential road in the port town of Onomichi, the area has become a tourist spot, with its steep slopes, stone steps, and quaint area where old townhouses remain. The area is popular for photography and strolling, thanks to its appealing local cat-loving culture and nostalgic townscape depicted in films and literature.

Highlights

  • Cat figurines, bronze statues, and cat-themed plaques are scattered throughout the alleys, allowing you to enjoy "cat hunting" while taking a walk.
  • You can often meet local cats and pet cats, and their relaxed demeanor makes for great photos (please check before touching).
  • The nostalgic scenery is typical of Onomichi, with cobblestone streets, stone steps, walls of old townhouses, and small storefronts of private homes.
  • If you go up to the observation deck at Senkoji Park, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Onomichi Strait and Mukojima.
  • There are many unique shops in the area, such as cafes, general stores, and second-hand bookstores, so you can stop by during your stroll.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Onomichi Station. From the station, walk through Onomichi Hondori Street and up the hill in Onomichi. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes on foot (depending on your stamina and the route you take).
  • Senkoji Ropeway: If walking is too difficult, take the ropeway from around Onomichi Station towards Senkoji Park (the ropeway takes you to the top of the mountain in just a few minutes).
  • Bus/Taxi: You can take a taxi from Onomichi Station or take the city loop bus.
  • By car: Use parking lots around Onomichi (it may fill up during the tourist season, so it is recommended to arrive early).
  • Access tips: The alleys are narrow and many places are difficult for cars to access, so it's best to explore the area slowly on foot.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Cat Alley (strolling through the alleys) only: 15 to 30 minutes (longer if you take your time looking for cats and taking photos).
  • A stroll around Senkoji Park, the observation deck, and the surrounding cafes and art museums: Approximately 1-2 hours.
  • A day trip plan to thoroughly explore Onomichi: 3 to 5 hours or more (half a day to a full day if you include museums and island hopping).

Nearby spots

  • Senkoji Temple (Senkoji Park): A representative temple and observation point in Onomichi.
  • Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street: The main street lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, second-hand bookstores, and more.
  • Onomichi Film Archive: Enjoy exhibits related to Onomichi and film.
  • Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art (along with nearby art museums such as Onomichi City Museum of Art): A facility where you can experience the local culture.
  • Onomichi Ferry/Mukaishima: Take a ferry to the island on the opposite shore and enjoy exploring the Shimanami Kaido and the island.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • The alleys are narrow and have many stone steps and slopes, so please wear comfortable walking shoes. Some areas may be slippery in rainy weather.
  • Please refrain from feeding or touching the cats without permission, as this may lead to trouble or hygiene issues. When taking photographs, please be considerate and not disturb others.
  • Crowds: It gets crowded on weekends, holidays, and during peak tourist seasons (spring outings, autumn foliage viewing, Golden Week, etc.). If you want to avoid the crowds, visit early in the morning or in the evening for a more relaxed experience.
  • This road is also a residential road for local residents, so please refrain from littering or making loud noises.
  • Some stores have seasonal changes in opening hours and closing days, so if there is a store you want to visit, it's a good idea to check in advance.
