Tanga Market is a traditional shopping street-style market located in the heart of Kokura, Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu City. With a long history, it has long been a beloved local hub, serving as the heart of the community's food scene. Its narrow passageways are lined with a mix of fishmongers, fruit and vegetable vendors, meat shops, delicatessens, dried goods stores, and restaurants, offering a vibrant local food culture and atmosphere. With an increasing number of shops catering to tourists, visitors can enjoy fresh local seafood, homemade deli items, and delicious street food.

  • Nearest station: Just a few minutes' walk from Tanga Station on the Kitakyushu Monorail.
  • By JR: Approximately 5-10 minutes on foot from JR Kokura Station (South Exit, towards Uomachi).
  • Bus/Car: As it is located in the heart of Kokura, city buses are convenient. There are paid parking lots nearby, but the number of spaces is limited and they may be full at times.
  • Access from tourist spots: It's within walking distance of Kokura Castle and Riverwalk Kitakyushu, making it a convenient stop while strolling around the area.

  • Short trip: 30 minutes to 1 hour for eating street food and looking for souvenirs.
  • Take your time: If you want to look around the shops and have lunch, about 1.5 to 2 hours is sufficient.
  • Shopping-focused: If you plan to buy groceries at multiple stores, it's best to allow about two hours.

Nearby spots

  • Kokura Castle: Within walking distance. You can combine historical sightseeing with exploring the local market.
  • Riverwalk Kitakyushu: This shopping mall, cinema, and observation deck are recommended for families.
  • Uomachi Gintengai (Shopping Street): A shopping area linked to Tanga Market, with a wide variety of restaurants and shops.
  • Mojiko Retro (accessible by car or train): If you have time, you can also enjoy sightseeing in this retro port town.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, and during lunchtime. There are many narrow passageways, so please be considerate and avoid obstructing traffic.
  • Opening hours: Opening and closing times and regular closing days vary from store to store. Many stores close early in the morning, so if you have a specific store in mind, check in advance.
  • Payment: Some shops only accept cash. While some shops are increasingly accepting cashless payments, it's a good idea to have some cash on hand for peace of mind.
