Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tsuyama Castle (Tsuyamajo, Tsuruyama Park) is a castle ruins park located in the center of Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture. It is said to have been developed by Mori Tadamasa and others during the Keicho period (early Edo period), and castle remains from the Sengoku and Edo periods remain in good condition. Particularly noteworthy are the large stone walls (high stone walls) and the surrounding enclosures (kuruwa), and the entire castle ruins have been developed as a park, making it enjoyable to stroll through all seasons. The cherry blossoms in spring are particularly famous, with around 1,000 cherry trees covering the entire castle mountain area, earning it the title of "Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots." Its historical value, having been selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Castles," is also another attraction.

Highlights

  • Stone walls: The impressive stone walls built along the slope of Shiroyama are a great spot for taking photos. You can observe the structure and stacking methods of the stone walls that remain in various places.
  • Cherry blossoms at Kakuyama Park: They peak in spring (late March to early April). Some years they are lit up at night, making the park bustling with people who come to view the cherry blossoms at night.
  • Otemon Gate and Castle Ruins Walking Path: A leisurely walking path has been established, allowing you to explore the castle's moats, stone steps, turret ruins, etc. There is also an observation point from a high vantage point where you can get a panoramic view of Tsuyama city.
  • Historical exhibits and turrets (some areas require a fee): You may be able to view exhibits related to the castle and the Tsuyama domain, as well as some restored and preserved buildings (please check opening times in advance).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Tsuyama Station. Access from the station is possible by foot, bus, or taxi.
  • Walking: Approximately 15-25 minutes on foot from Tsuyama Station (depending on the route and walking speed). There is a slight slope to Shiroyama, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Bus/Taxi: From the station, there are city buses and taxis heading towards "Kakuyama Park (Tsuyama Castle Ruins)". If you are taking the bus, please check the number of buses in operation in advance.
  • By car: There are paid parking lots and park parking lots in the surrounding area. During busy periods such as cherry blossom season, the parking lots tend to fill up, so it is recommended to arrive early.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (to get a quick look at the views and main remains).
  • A leisurely stroll: 1.5 to 2 hours (if you walk around the park at a leisurely pace, taking photos and enjoying the views).
  • Cherry blossom season and events: 2-3 hours or more (taking into account night cherry blossoms, food stalls, and crowds).

Nearby spots

  • Jyoto District (old castle town streets): Dotted with traditional merchant houses, townhouses, cafes and souvenir shops, this area is perfect for a stroll.
  • Tsuyama Learning Railway Museum: A museum with exhibits for railway enthusiasts (accessible by car or public transport).
  • Tsuyama Local Museum and History and Folklore Museum: A facility where you can experience the history and culture of the Tsuyama region.
  • Nearby Cuisine: There are many restaurants in the city that serve local cuisine, such as Tsuyama Hormone Udon.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded during the cherry blossom season in spring (especially on weekends) and during festivals and events. If you visit early in the morning or on a weekday, you'll have a better chance of seeing the sights at a leisurely pace.
  • Footing and stamina: Shiroyama is hilly and has many stone steps and slopes. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be careful as the ground can be slippery after rain or on frozen surfaces in winter.
  • Manners: Climbing the stone walls or ruins, or damaging the plants, is strictly prohibited. Take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas. If you are bringing pets, please keep them on a leash and clean up any droppings.
  • Illumination and opening/closing times: The park is sometimes lit up at night, but not always. There may be fees or time restrictions for viewing certain areas of the park and the tower, so please check the latest information in advance.
  • Public transportation: As this is a regional city, the number of buses is limited. It is best to check the return journey time.

(Additional Information) Before visiting, check the official Tsuyama City Tourism website and the latest information and event calendar for Tsuruyama Park to find out the opening times, whether there is parking, whether there will be illuminations, and how crowded the park is expected to be.
