Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Fuji (Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture) is Japan's iconic active volcano, rising 3,776 meters above sea level. It has been a place of worship since ancient times, and temples and shrines associated with the Asama faith (such as Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha) remain at the foot of the mountain. In 2013, it was registered as a World Heritage Site under the title "Mount Fuji - A Place of Sacred Worship and a Source of Artistic Inspiration," and is a scenic spot visited by many tourists from both Japan and abroad. The Fujinomiya Trail on the Shizuoka side is famous for its hiking trails, the views from the Fujinomiya Trail's fifth station (approximately 2,400 meters above sea level), and the early morning sunrise (goraiko). The natural scenery at the foot of Mount Fuji and local cuisine (Fujinomiya yakisoba) are also appealing.

Highlights

  • Fujinomiya Trail 5th Station: A relatively high-altitude viewing spot where you can easily enjoy the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. If the weather is good, you can see as far as Suruga Bay and the Izu Islands.
  • Climbing (Fujinomiya Trail): A full-scale climbing route aiming for the summit of Mount Fuji. The view of the crater (crater crater) and the sunrise from the summit are exceptional (climbing is recommended in the summer when the mountain is open to the public).
  • Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine: This shrine has been the center of worship of Mount Fuji since ancient times, and you can visit it to pray and take a historical walk.
  • Mount Fuji World Heritage Center (Fujinomiya City): This center has exhibits on the origins of Mount Fuji, as well as religious beliefs and culture, making it a convenient place to get some background information before visiting.
  • Shiraito Falls: A famous waterfall at the foot of Mount Fuji. The contrast between the spring water and the greenery is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Observation spots such as Asagiri Plateau and Lake Tanuki: Enjoy the farm scenery with Mount Fuji in the background and the quiet morning view of the lake.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Fujinomiya Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line and Minobu Line. A convenient base for sightseeing.
  • Public transportation:
    • From Tokyo: Take the Shinkansen to Shin-Fuji Station (approximately 1 hour), or take a local train to Fuji Station or Fujinomiya Station (travel time depends on the route).
    • From Fujinomiya Station: Take a seasonal bus or sightseeing bus to the Fujinomiya 5th Station (direct buses often operate during the summer climbing season, taking approximately 50-60 minutes). Bus schedules vary by season and year, so it's important to check in advance.
  • car:
    • Use the Tomei Expressway, Shin-Tomei Expressway, or national highways. From the nearest interchange (Tomei Expressway: Fuji IC, or around Tomei Fuji IC), you can access the parking lot at the base of the mountain and the trailhead. It takes about 40-60 minutes by car to reach the Fujinomiya Fifth Station (depending on road conditions).
    • In the summer, parking lots around the fifth station fill up quickly, so we recommend using public transportation and leaving early in the morning.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Sightseeing at Fujinomiya Trail 5th Station: 30 minutes to 2 hours (strolling, photography, snacks, etc.).
  • Climbing to the summit of Mt. Fuji (Fujinomiya Route): A round trip in one day will take approximately 8-14 hours (6-10 hours for the ascent, 3-5 hours for the descent), depending on your physical condition. Many people choose to stay overnight in a mountain hut (departing at night to watch the sunrise).
  • City tour including Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center and Sengen Taisha Shrine: Half a day to one day.
  • Day trips including the surrounding area (Shiraito Falls, Asagiri Plateau, etc.): Half a day to a full day, or overnight if you want to take it easy.

Nearby spots

  • Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine (Fujinomiya City): A historic shrine where you can worship and take a cultural stroll.
  • Mount Fuji World Heritage Center (Fujinomiya City): Deepen your understanding of Mount Fuji through the exhibits.
  • Shiraito Falls (Fujinomiya City): A beautiful view of the waterfall and clear stream.
  • Asagiri Plateau and Lake Tanuki: Idyllic scenery, camping, and views of Mt. Fuji.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Climbing season and weather: Climbing outside of the climbing season (usually from early July to early September) is dangerous during the harsh winter months, so even experienced climbers should exercise caution. The weather can change suddenly, so it's essential to bring warm clothing, rain gear, and a headlamp.
  • Altitude sickness: Due to the large difference in altitude, there is a risk of altitude sickness. Please do not push yourself too hard, and be sure to pace yourself and stay hydrated.
  • Crowds: The summit, the fifth station, and early morning sunrise times are extremely crowded. Weekends and the Obon period are especially congested and cause traffic congestion.
  • Seasonal Transportation: Bus routes and parking to the fifth station may change seasonally and annually. Please check the latest information on transportation and road closures before visiting.
  • Manners and nature conservation: Always take your trash with you. Toilets are limited, so please bring portable toilets and be prepared (the toilets near the fifth station may require a fee). To protect the plants and terrain, there are areas where the use of fire and smoking are strictly prohibited.
  • Safety measures: Although there is a rescue system in place, it has limitations, so be sure to submit a climbing plan (climbing notification), have a way to contact your companions, keep up with weather information, and check your equipment.
