Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Senpiro Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Yakushima Town, Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is characterized by its easy sightseeing, as it can be viewed up close from an observation point along the road. The waterfall was nurtured by Yakushima's lush forests and abundant rainfall, and is surrounded by lush greenery. Its appeal lies in the changing appearance of its scenery depending on the season and weather. It is relatively easy to access and can be viewed in a short amount of time, making it a good place to stop by in between sightseeing on Yakushima.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view from the observation point: You can look down on the entire waterfall from the viewpoint on the side of the road, making it easy to take photos of the waterfall and the beauty of the surrounding valley.
  • Seasonal scenery: Enjoy the changing scenery with the seasons and weather, including fresh greenery, deep greenery, autumn leaves, and abundant water after rain.
  • Easy, short sightseeing: Parking and observation spaces are available, and the walking distance is short, making it easy for families with children and the elderly to visit.
  • Set tours with the surrounding nature: It is easy to incorporate this into a one-day sightseeing itinerary by combining it with the forests, coastlines, and other waterfalls that are typical of Yakushima.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There are no train lines on Yakushima, so you will first need to get there by plane or ferry.

  • By plane: Flights operate from Kagoshima Airport to Yakushima Airport (located in the northern part of the island). After arriving, you can travel by rental car or local bus.
  • Ferry: Enter the island from the mainland of Kagoshima by ferry or high-speed boat bound for Miyanoura Port or Anbo Port. From the port, travel by rental car or local bus.
  • Getting around the island: Renting a car or bicycle is convenient. You can also access the island by bus (Yakushima Kotsu, etc.), but the number of buses is limited so you need to pay attention to the timetable.
  • Estimated travel time: From Yakushima Airport, Miyanoura, or Awa, it will vary depending on your departure point, but it is usually about 20 to 60 minutes by car (this may vary depending on traffic conditions and your departure point).

*There are often parking lots near observation points, but please be aware that the number of spaces is limited during peak seasons.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Observation deck viewing only: 15-30 minutes (including photography)
  • Enjoying the scenery at your own pace and taking a stroll around the area: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • If you are taking a day trip that combines other sightseeing spots, we recommend that you allow yourself a few hours of leeway, including travel time.

Nearby spots

  • Okonotaki Falls: A representative waterfall of Yakushima, this popular spot can be accessed by car. Many people visit it together with Senhironotaki Falls.
  • Shiratani Unsuikyo: A trekking spot known for its mossy forest. Recommended for those who want to enjoy a nature walk.
  • Yakusugi Land/Yakusugi Nature Museum: An area with facilities and walking trails where you can learn about Yakusugi.
  • Miyanoura and Awa townscape and port: Convenient bases as they are home to many restaurants and accommodations.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The parking lot can get crowded during the tourist season (spring to autumn holidays and summer vacation). You can avoid the crowds by visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Weather and safety: Yakushima receives a lot of rainfall and the water level can rise in a short period of time. In rainy or flooded weather, the ground can be slippery and there is danger from rising rivers, so please do not go too close.
  • Clothing and equipment: It is recommended to bring comfortable walking shoes (non-slip trekking shoes, etc.), a waterproof jacket, and insect repellent.
  • Manners: In order to protect nature, please stay on the trails, always take your trash with you, avoid stepping on plants and moss, and enjoy the scenery quietly.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Flying drones without permission is a nuisance to environmental conservation and other visitors, so please check the rules and refrain from flying drones without permission.
  • Transportation: The island's roads are narrow and have many curves. If you are driving a rental car, be careful of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. If you are unsure about your driving skills, consider using a local bus or tour.
