Hachigata Castle Ruins (Yorii Town, Saitama Prefecture)

TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hachigata Castle, located in Yorii Town, Saitama Prefecture, is one of the most representative castle ruins from the Sengoku period. Its layout cleverly utilizes the topography of the mountains and rivers, and its remains, including earthworks, dry moats, and enclosures, are well preserved. It was developed by the Later Hojo clan (or influential people in the region) as a strategic point in the northern Kanto region, but it was attacked and captured as part of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's expedition to Odawara (1590).

It has now been developed as Hachigata Castle Park, where you can learn about the castle's original structure and local history through walking trails and exhibition facilities (such as the Hachigata Castle History Museum), making it a popular spot not only for history buffs but also for those who enjoy nature walks and photography.

Highlights

  • Actual remains of earthworks, moats, and enclosures: Defensive structures from the Warring States period remain over a wide area, allowing you to get a sense of the scale of the territory.
  • Fortifications that make use of the natural terrain: You can clearly see how the castle is laid out to take advantage of rivers and differences in elevation, and learn about the ingenuity that went into castle construction while touring the area.
  • Hachigata Castle History Museum (or Archives): The history of Hachigata Castle, as well as its construction, attack, and defense, are explained in an easy-to-understand manner using excavated items, models, and panel explanations.
  • Walking trails and observation points: From the trail that goes around the remains of the main citadel and the main enclosure, you can see the scenery of the Yorii countryside. Another attractive feature is the large number of photo spots.
  • Seasonal nature: You can enjoy the scenery of each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn (each season has its own unique charm).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Yorii Station (connects to the Tobu Tojo Line, Chichibu Railway, JR Hachiko Line/Hachiko Line/Takasaki Line) *Please check the line name when using the service.

  • By car: Parking is available (limited spaces). It is easily accessible from the Tokyo metropolitan area via the Kanetsu Expressway and national highways. Please be aware of traffic congestion and parking spaces.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, and long weekends, the number of visitors increases and parking lots can become crowded. We recommend using public transportation or arriving early.
  • Manners: Historic sites are protected as cultural assets. Unauthorized entry into the ruins, disturbance to vegetation, and leaving trash behind are strictly prohibited. Please follow the instructions on the signs when visiting.
  • Walking environment: The walking trails include dirt and gravel roads, steps, and steep slopes. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. After rain, the trails can become muddy and slippery in places.
  • Insect and weather precautions: In summer, be careful of insects, especially mosquitoes and ticks around grassy areas. In winter and on rainy days, be sure to bring warm clothing and rain gear.
  • Check facility information: The museum's opening hours and event dates may change. For the latest information, please check the official Yorii Town website or the Hachigata Castle Museum website.

The Hachigata Castle ruins are a spot where you can enjoy both the actual remains that retain the atmosphere of the Warring States period and the natural scenery of the four seasons. If you gain some basic knowledge at the history museum before touring the ruins, you can enjoy the sights in greater depth.
