Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hakkeijima Sea Paradise is a complex leisure facility surrounded by the sea in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It was constructed on the artificial island of Hakkeijima between the 1980s and 1990s, and since it began full-scale operation in the 1990s, it has become a popular spot attracting many visitors from Japan and abroad. The facility is characterized by its large aquarium (Aqua Museum), which is centered around dolphin and sea lion shows, a petting lagoon, attractions such as a Ferris wheel and roller coaster, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

One of its defining features is the close proximity to the ocean and its creatures. In addition to being able to observe the underwater world up close in the large aquariums and tunnel-type exhibits, there are also plenty of hands-on animal experiences and seasonal events (fireworks, night illuminations, summer water shows, etc.). As a comprehensive leisure facility that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, it is popular with families and couples.

Highlights

  • Aqua Museum (large aquarium): There are a variety of exhibits, including a large tank where you can see sharks and large migratory fish, a jellyfish exhibit, and a corner for deep-sea creatures. The underwater tunnel and observation points through glass are highlights.
  • Interactive Lagoon and Touch Pool: An experience corner where you can touch starfish, sea cucumbers, etc. Even small children can safely come into contact with marine life (Event status may change depending on the season and time).
  • Animal show (dolphins, sea lions, etc.): A show where you can enjoy the impressive jumps and performances up close. It has a set time, so be sure to check the schedule.
  • Pleasure Land (Amusement Park Area): It has a Ferris wheel, roller coasters, thrilling rides, and attractions for children. From the Ferris wheel, you can get a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay and Yokohama.
  • Food & Shopping: There are many shops selling seafood dishes, casual food, and original goods. Some stores offer views unique to the seaside.
  • Seasonal Events: There are seasonal attractions to enjoy, such as illuminations (winter), fireworks displays (summer - check dates), and nighttime light-up events.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Monorail (General Route)Take the Keikyu Line, JR, etc. to Kanazawa-Hakkei Station (Keikyu Line/Keihin Kyuko Line), then transfer to the Kanazawa Seaside Line and get off at Hakkeijima Station. From Hakkeijima Station, you can walk directly to the facility. From Kanazawa-Hakkei to Hakkeijima, it's just one stop on the Seaside Line (a few minutes).
  • car: Accessible via the Shuto Expressway Bayshore Route and public roads. There is a paid parking lot at Hakkeijima (it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early on weekends and during peak seasons).
  • From the airport: It is about 30 to 60 minutes by car from Haneda Airport (depending on traffic conditions), or you can also take the train (Keikyu Line → Kanazawa-Hakkei → Seaside Line).
  • bus: Depending on the season or events, special direct buses may operate from the Yokohama area. Please check the official website or station information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Aquarium only: 2-3 hours (if you take your time looking around the exhibits)
  • Aquarium + show + snacks: 3-4 hours
  • Full course including amusement park attractions, shopping, and meals: Half a day to a full day (approximately 4 to 7 hours)
  • If you are planning to include events (night illuminations or fireworks), we recommend staying from the evening until night.

Nearby spots

  • A stroll along the Kanazawa Hakkei seaside: A long-standing scenic spot where you can enjoy walking along the seaside and sunset views.
  • Shomyo-ji Temple: A historic temple with gardens and ancient architecture (easy to access by car).
  • Kanazawa Bunko (Museum): A museum that displays historical documents. Recommended as a cultural detour spot.
  • Yokohama/Minato Mirai area:You can also travel by train to tourist attractions (Red Brick Warehouse, Landmark Tower, Yokohama Chinatown, etc.).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It gets very crowded on weekends, holidays, summer vacation, Golden Week, and the New Year's holiday period. Be aware of waiting in line to get into the aquarium and shows, queues at restaurants, and full parking lots. We recommend visiting on weekdays or right after opening.
  • Check tickets and show times: Tickets can be purchased at the counter on the day or in advance online. Please check the schedule in advance as the dolphin show and other events have set times.
  • Weather/Clothing: It can be cold on windy days at outdoor attractions, ferris wheels, and along the sea. Bring a jacket, especially during the change of seasons and at night.
  • Pets, strollers, etc.: Some facilities have restrictions on the number of pets allowed inside (except for guide dogs, etc.). Some facilities offer rental services for strollers and wheelchairs, but please check in advance as the number is limited.
  • Manners: When touching exhibits or animals, please follow the instructions of the staff. Feeding and touching without permission are often prohibited. Also, please refrain from using flash photography or making loud noises as they may disturb other visitors.
  • Safety/Health: As this is a seaside facility, please be careful of tripping or falling. If you are prone to motion sickness, please refrain from using some of the attractions or prepare accordingly.

Before your visit, we recommend checking the official website for the latest information on opening hours, admission fees, show times, event information, parking availability, etc. Have a great time!
