Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hirakubozaki is a cape located at the tip of the Hirakubo Peninsula in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, and is known for the Hirakubozaki Lighthouse. Located near the northern tip of the island, it is a great viewing spot offering a panoramic view of the surrounding coral reefs and blue ocean. Since ancient times, the lighthouse was erected here to mark fishing routes and ensure the safety of maritime traffic, and today it is visited by many drivers and tourists, and is attractive for its crystal clear waters and the horizon that stretches into the distance.

Highlights

  • Hirakubozaki Lighthouse: The contrast between the white lighthouse and the surrounding grassland and sea makes for a great photo. There is an observation space around the lighthouse where you can enjoy a nearly 360-degree panorama.
  • Blue and green gradientThe color of the sea changes constantly due to the tides and the coral on the seabed, and you can enjoy colors ranging from emerald green to deep cobalt blue.
  • Horizon and distant viewOn clear days, you can see the ocean for miles, and on windy days, the seascape with white waves is impressive. The sunrise and sunset views are also beautiful.
  • Nature observation and bird watchingDepending on the season, you can observe migratory birds and seabirds, and the grasslands and coastal nature are also highlights.
  • Stargazing: At night, there are fewer city lights, making it a good time to observe the stars (please be mindful of the weather and safety when visiting).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There are no trains on Ishigaki Island, so the main means of transportation are cars, rental cars, local buses, and tourist taxis.

  • Rental car/Private car: This is the most convenient way to get there. It takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes by car from Ishigaki Port or Ishigaki Airport (depending on road conditions and the starting point). The route north along the Hirakubo Peninsula is a scenic drive. There is parking space around the lighthouse, but it is not very spacious.
  • Local bus: Local buses (Yaeyama Bus, etc.) operate in the Yaeyama region, but please check the timetable in advance as there are few buses. You may need to walk from the bus stop to the lighthouse or cape.
  • Sightseeing tours/taxi: It is sometimes included in half-day tours from tourist information centers and travel agencies, making it convenient if you want to visit without worrying about driving.
  • Walking: The area around the lighthouse is within walking distance, but it is far from the village, so it is not common to go there by foot alone.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30-45 minutes (viewing the lighthouse and the view, taking photos)
  • Leisurely stroll and photography: 1-2 hours (extend if you want to walk the surrounding trails or take in the sunrise or sunset)
  • For stargazing and enjoying nature: 2 hours or more

Nearby spots

  • Tamatorizaki Observation Deck: Located on the east coast, this observation deck offers a panoramic view of the ocean and greenery. It's a great driving course along with Cape Hirakubo.
  • Yonehara Beach (Yonehara Coast): A popular beach for snorkeling and coral observation. The water is highly transparent and perfect for beach activities.
  • Kabira Bay (Kabira Bay): A popular tourist spot with glass-bottom boats and spectacular views. Most are within a 30-40 minute drive from Cape Hirakubo.
  • Coral Reefs and Beaches in Shiraho: Known as a coral conservation area, it is a base for diving and snorkeling.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Transportation and AccessPublic transportation is infrequent, so be sure to check round-trip bus schedules in advance. Renting a car is convenient, but be aware that parking spaces are limited and can get crowded.
  • Facilities and toilets: There may be few shops or cafes around the lighthouse, so please prepare drinks and other necessities in advance. Please note that there are limited toilets.
  • Strong winds and weather: The cape is often windy. Bring a hat and a light jacket, and in bad weather, watch your step and do not venture too close to the tip of the cape.
  • Beach safety: Rocky areas and cliffs are slippery and dangerous. Please avoid swimming or reckless behavior on the rocks.
  • Manners and Nature Conservation: Please observe local nature conservation rules, such as not damaging coral or marine life, always taking your trash with you, and not entering plants or designated areas.
  • drone: Drone flying may be restricted around lighthouses or due to national or local regulations. Be sure to check local rules before use.
  • Seasonal precautions: In the summer, the sun is strong, so please take precautions against heatstroke. During typhoon season (mainly from June to October), please avoid visiting or be sure to check the weather forecast for safety.

Cape Hirakubo is a place where you can enjoy impressive scenery even if you visit easily. When visiting, please check the transportation and weather conditions in advance, and enjoy the area while observing manners that encourage coexistence with nature.
