Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hachijo Fuji is a stratovolcano located in Hachijo Town, Tokyo, approximately 854 meters above sea level, and is a landmark representing Hachijojima. Nicknamed "Hachijo's Fuji" for its beautiful conical shape, the mountain was formed by relatively young volcanic activity, resulting in a gently sloping base and a wide crater. The crater at the top is covered with a wide grassy area, and visitors can enjoy a stroll around the crater rim (circling the crater rim) and a 360-degree view from the summit. On clear days, visitors can see the island's villages, the surrounding sea, and even the distant silhouettes of the Izu Islands, making it a popular photo spot. While the climate here is characterized by southern vegetation, the unique natural scenery of the volcanic grassland landscape is also enjoyable.
Highlights
- Crater Rim Walk: Walk around the wide crater rim and enjoy views of the entire island and the Pacific Ocean. The leisurely walk takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
- View from the summit: A panoramic view of Hachijojima's villages, harbor, and ocean opens up, and if the weather is good, you can even see the other Izu Islands in the distance.
- Grasslands and alpine plants: Seasonal flowers bloom on the grasslands and slopes inside the crater, and the best time to see the flowers is from spring to early summer (subtropical plants are also mixed in).
- View of the hiking trail: From the relatively well-maintained hiking trail, you can enjoy the contrast between the sea and the mountains that is typical of Hachijojima. It is also a great place for photography and picnics.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Weather changes: The maritime climate can be subject to sudden changes, including strong winds and fog. Check the weather forecast before setting off and bring warm clothing and rain gear.
- Sunlight and UV rays: As the area is surrounded by the sea, the sun is often very strong. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Footing and Equipment: The hiking trail is well maintained, but there are also gravel and steep slopes. Please wear trekking shoes or other non-slip footwear. We recommend bringing drinking water and snacks.
- Manners: To protect the volcanic terrain and natural environment, please take your trash with you and avoid collecting plants or entering restricted areas. Please check the rules beforehand if you are bringing dogs or using fires such as for barbecues.
- Crowds: During peak seasons (long weekends, summer vacation, and tourist season), the area around the trailhead can get crowded. If you choose to go early in the morning or on a weekday, you can enjoy a more relaxed experience.
– Transportation and operation information: Flights and boat services to the island may be canceled or suspended depending on the weather and season, so please check and book your round-trip transportation in advance and consider an extra day.
- Health and First Aid: Medical facilities are limited on the island, so if you have a chronic illness, please consult in advance and do not forget to take your regular medication. To prevent getting lost, avoid traveling alone or descending the mountain after dark.
If necessary, please check the hiking trail map and the latest information from local tourist information (such as the Hachijo Town Tourist Association) before visiting. On a clear day, you can enjoy the beautiful mountain shape of Hachijo Fuji, its wide crater, and a magnificent panorama of the sea.
