Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Numata Castle is the site of a castle in the center of Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. It originated during the Sengoku period and developed as a regional political and military base. While much of the castle has changed shape since the Edo period, remains such as earthworks, dry moats, and stone walls remain, and are now maintained as Numata Park (Numata Castle Ruins Park). The castle site is close to the city center and is known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves, and the view of the surrounding mountains from the castle ruins is also attractive.

Highlights

  • The remains of the main enclosure, earthworks, and dry moat: You can stroll around the remains that show the original shape of the castle. There are information boards and guide signs, so you can learn about history as you go around.
  • Part of the stone wall: You can observe up close the remains of the original structure.
  • Cherry blossoms and autumn leaves: In spring, you can enjoy a tunnel of cherry blossoms, and in autumn, the beautifully colored trees make this a great place for cherry blossom viewing and photography.
  • Viewing spot: From the castle ruins, there are places where you can look out over the surrounding mountains and the city, and enjoy the scenery throughout the seasons.
  • Walking paths and benches: The park is perfect for strolling or taking a short break. Local information boards provide historical information.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Joetsu Line "Numata Station". About 10-15 minutes on foot (depending on walking speed and exit).
  • Bus: You may be able to use local buses and sightseeing buses within Numata City. Please check the schedule and route in advance.
  • By car: Approximately 10 minutes by car from Numata IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway. There are municipal parking lots in the city and paid parking lots in the surrounding area (limited space).
  • Parking and Facilities: The castle park is generally open to the public. Toilets are available in and nearby the park, but they may be closed at night, so it is recommended to visit during the day.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • A quick stroll around the castle ruins only: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Take your time to look at the ruins, take photos, and read the historical site explanations: Approximately 1 to 2 hours.
  • If you combine sightseeing with nearby museums and hot springs: Half-day to full-day course.

Nearby spots

  • Numata City: Lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, you can enjoy local cuisine.
  • Oze (access point): A popular base for mountain climbing and nature walks (seasonal buses available).
  • Hot spring resorts such as Oigami Onsen and Sarugakyo Onsen: Convenient for soothing your fatigue after sightseeing at the castle ruins.
  • Nearby nature and parks: There are views of the Tone River basin and hiking trails nearby.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: In spring (cherry blossom season), the park can get crowded with cherry blossom viewers. On weekends and during peak viewing periods, the parking lot may fill up, so we recommend using public transportation or arriving early.
  • Manners: Historic sites are cultural assets of the region. Please observe proper etiquette, such as not entering restricted areas, taking your trash with you, and not touching plants or remains.
  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, snow and frozen roads can make walking slippery. Please wear warm clothing and non-slip shoes. In rainy weather, be careful of mud and your footing.
  • Photography/Drones: General photography is permitted, but flying drones etc. may require prior permission from local authorities or administrators.
  • Opening hours of surrounding facilities: The park itself is generally open, but surrounding facilities (museums, toilets, etc.) have limited hours, so please check in advance.

(Additional Information) Before you visit, it's a good idea to check the latest information, opening and closing times, and event information from Numata City and the tourist association. Have a wonderful trip!
