Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Hatoma Island is a small inhabited island in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, belonging to Taketomi Town. With only a small population and a tiny village, the island's charm lies in its traditional, rustic island scenery and abundant nature. The island's traditional folk song, "Hatoma Bushi," is known as one of the most representative folk songs of the Yaeyama region, and it also has a unique cultural history. With its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, coral reefs, abundant marine life, and star-filled skies at night, the island is popular with nature-loving travelers.
Highlights
– Hatoma Island Beach: White sand and shallow coral reefs make it a great place to relax and enjoy snorkeling. The water is very clear and there are plenty of fish.
- Walking around the island: Because it is a small island, you can easily walk around it on foot or by rental bicycle. You can enjoy the changing scenery of the village, port, and coastline (approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour on foot).
– Around Hatoma Port: The fishing boats and the beautiful colors of the sea are dotted with photo spots. The village in front of the port is home to guesthouses and small shops.
- Traditional culture and folk songs: You may have the opportunity to experience the Hatoma Bushi and folk songs that have been passed down on the island. They are sometimes performed at inns and village events, so if you have the chance, be sure to ask about them.
- Stargazing: With little artificial light, the starry sky is incredibly beautiful at night. You may even be able to see the Milky Way.
- Nature observation: You can observe beach creatures and seaside plants that appear at low tide.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
– Nearest train station: None (the Yaeyama Islands do not have a train line).
- Nearest airport: New Ishigaki Airport (Ishigaki Island). The most common way to get to Ishigaki Island is by plane.
- Boat from Ishigaki Island: High-speed boats and ferries depart from Ishigaki Port (Ishigaki Remote Island Terminal) for Hatoma Island. The number of boats varies depending on the season, so be sure to check the boat company's timetable before setting off. The estimated travel time is about 30-50 minutes by high-speed boat, while the ferry is a little longer, usually around an hour (this is just a guideline).
Direct charter and sightseeing tours: If you're visiting on a snorkeling or day trip, there are half-day and full-day tours available departing from Ishigaki Island.
- Travel from the port: The island is small, so it is best to travel on foot. Rental bicycles and some guesthouses may offer transportation.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: If you want to relax on the beach, explore the island, and have lunch, half a day to a full day (4-8 hours) is recommended. Day trips from Ishigaki are also possible.
- Accommodation: If you want to enjoy the island's tranquility, starry sky, and relaxing time, we recommend staying for one to two nights. As the number of accommodations is limited, we recommend making a reservation in advance during peak seasons.
Nearby spots

– The Yaeyama Islands, including Taketomi Island, Kohama Island, Kuroshima Island, and Iriomote Island: You can experience different natural and cultural experiences on day trips or round trips. These islands are also a base for island hopping by boat.
- Snorkeling and diving spots: There are many beautiful coral reefs in the surrounding waters, and many spots that can be visited by boat tour.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Limited number of boats: There are not many boats, so be sure to check the return trip and your travel schedule in advance and allow yourself plenty of time.
- Few stores and amenities: There are no convenience stores or large stores, and the number of restaurants and shops is limited. It is a good idea to bring cash (small change) and purchase drinks and other necessary items on Ishigaki Island.
- Medical care and emergency response: There are limited medical institutions and pharmacies on the island, so please bring any necessary medications with you.
- Protect the natural environment: Please be considerate of the environment by not touching the corals or living creatures and taking your trash home with you. When snorkeling, please do not put your feet on the corals and choose sunscreen that is gentle on the corals.
- Manners: As there are few residents, please be especially considerate of noise at night and taking out the trash. Please be quiet within the village.
- Weather and typhoon season: During Okinawa's typhoon season (mainly summer to autumn) and rainy season, flight cancellations and schedule changes due to bad weather are more likely to occur. Please check the weather forecast and flight information frequently depending on the time of your trip.
- Protection from the sun and insects: The sun is strong, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and a drink. There are also mosquitoes and small insects, so it's also useful to bring insect repellent.
If you prepare with the above in mind, you can relax and enjoy the tranquil nature and culture of Hatoma Island. Be sure to check the latest boat schedules and accommodation availability before setting off.
