Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Korankei is a scenic valley in Asuke Town, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, famous for its autumn foliage along the Tomoe River. Approximately 4,000 maple trees are planted here, and in autumn the valley is bathed in a gradation of red and orange. Originally a scenic spot centered around a local temple (Kosekiji Temple) and village, it was developed as a tourist destination from the Edo to Meiji periods onwards, and is now known nationwide for the Korankei Maple Festival and nighttime illuminations. The charm of the valley, the clear streams and bridges (such as Taigetsu Bridge), and the atmosphere of Asuke, where old townscapes remain, are what make it so appealing.
Highlights
- Taigetsubashi Bridge area: The wooden bridge over the Tomoe River and the surrounding maple trees are some of the most popular photo spots in Korankei.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The area gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays, especially during the peak autumn foliage season (usually from late October to mid- to late November). We recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday. The area also gets very crowded during the nighttime illuminations, so consider using public transportation or a tour, and leaving early.
- Parking: Parking spaces in the area are limited, and they may fill up or become congested during peak hours. Please follow the directions of parking staff and avoid parking on the street.
- Clothing and footing: The valley has slopes, stone steps, and wet areas, so please bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing. It gets cold at night.
- Environmental conservation and etiquette: Please observe basic etiquette, such as not touching or breaking plants and trees, taking your trash home with you, and smoking only in designated areas. During the illumination period, there may be restrictions on setting up tripods and occupying the area for long periods of time.
- Countermeasures against crowds: When it is crowded, it will take time to take photos and move around, so please allow yourself plenty of time for meetings and the last public transportation.
- Check event information: Information on the dates of the Momiji Festival and illuminations, traffic restrictions, temporary parking, etc. varies from year to year. Please check the official website or Toyota City Tourism Information in advance.
You can enjoy the natural beauty and atmosphere of Korankei throughout the year, but the most popular season is the autumn foliage season. Please plan your visit early and follow the local rules to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
