Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Suma-dera is an ancient temple located in the hills near the sea in Suma Ward, Kobe City. Located in the scenic Suma-no-ura Bay area since ancient times, it is a temple that has often appeared in waka poetry and literature. It is also known as a place associated with works such as The Tale of Genji and The Tale of the Heike from the Heian period, and the temple grounds are attractive for their scenic views of the sea and mountains. The temple grounds are home to the main hall, stone steps, old stonework, and quaint architecture along the approach, making it a great place to stroll and enjoy the seasonal flowers and sea views.

Highlights

  • Ocean view from the temple grounds: The view of the Suma coast and Awaji Island is attractive. The view is especially good on clear days.
  • Historical approach and stone steps: The stone steps, old stonework, and moss-covered approach add to the charm of the shrine.
  • Touring sites associated with literature: This historical site is popular with literature fans as it is linked to The Tale of Genji and Heian period literature.
  • Seasonal flowers and trees: Enjoy the charm of each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, sea breezes in summer, and fallen leaves in autumn.

  • Crowds: The area tends to get crowded during cherry blossom season, summer beach season, and consecutive holidays. If you want to visit in peace, we recommend visiting on a weekday morning.
  • Footing: There are many stone steps and uneven surfaces along the approach to the shrine, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Be careful as the area can be slippery in rainy weather.
