Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Blue Cave is a sea cave located in Onna Village in central Okinawa's main island, and officially refers to an underwater spot near Cape Maeda. It was named after the sunlight that shines into the cave, which reflects and refracts off the seawater, creating a mysterious blue light, and attracts many tourists from both Japan and abroad for snorkeling and diving. The cave is captivating due to the landscape created by the erosion of Ryukyu limestone by the sea and the maintained crystal clear waters.
Highlights
- "Blue light" inside the cave: The light shining in from the cave entrance shines blue underwater, making for a great photo opportunity.
- Colorful tropical fish and coral reefs: You can see them up close by snorkeling or on a trial dive.
- Various entry methods: Beach entry (from the rocks at Cape Maeda) and small boat access are available.
- Highly transparent sea and topography: The opening of the cave and the contrast between the water surface and underwater are beautiful.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the summer (July to August), Golden Week, and the New Year holidays. We recommend early morning tours and weekday tours.
- Reservations: Because this is a popular spot, it's best to make reservations in advance for snorkeling and diving. Be sure to also check whether transportation and equipment rentals are available.
- Safety measures: Depending on the sea conditions, entry into the cave may be prohibited on the day. The tour will be canceled in the event of high waves or strong winds, so please pay close attention to the weather and sea conditions on the day.
- Manners: Please protect the marine environment by not touching or feeding the corals or other creatures, and by taking your trash home with you. In particular, stepping on the corals will cause them to break.
- Equipment and preparation: Choose sunscreen that is gentle on coral reefs, and bring a change of clothes, a towel, a waterproof camera (if necessary), and cash (some small shops and parking lots may not accept cards).
- Physical condition and skills: For trial diving, you will be checked for your health and shallow swimming ability. If you are unsure about equalizing your ears or swimming, please consult with the shop in advance.
- Seasonal notes: Even in winter, there are days when visibility is good depending on the weather, but the water temperature drops, so you will need a wetsuit and warm clothing. There are also times when jellyfish appear and ocean currents become strong, so please follow the guide's instructions.
The Blue Cave is a popular spot where you can experience a powerful experience in a short amount of time. Please be sure to prepare in advance and observe the rules of etiquette to enjoy the beautiful underwater world safely.
