Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kumomi Onsen is a small hot spring resort located on the Nishiizu Coast in Matsuzaki Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a history as a fishing town, its location facing the sea offers a unique landscape and seafood delicacies. Guests can enjoy the sound of the waves and sunsets from the open-air baths and public baths at the inns, and the area is also known as a base for playing on the rocks, snorkeling, and diving. The scenery created by the reefs and cliffs, especially the beautiful sunsets, attracts visitors.

Highlights

  • Open-air baths overlooking the sea: Many ryokans have open-air baths where you can enjoy the sound of the waves and the sunset. We recommend staying overnight and relaxing in the hot springs.
  • Public baths and foot baths: Depending on the area, there are public baths and foot baths where you can easily experience the hot springs (please check in advance for opening hours and cleaning days).
  • Ushitsukiiwa: A typical underwater reef in Kumomi, this is a popular spot for divers. You can see the underwater scenery and small fish.
  • Playing on the rocks and snorkeling: You can enjoy observing marine life in the tide pools at low tide or on days when the water is clear.
  • Sunsets and starry skies: Due to the small population, there is little light pollution, making it a great place to enjoy sunsets and stargazing.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Car: This is the most convenient way to travel. Take the Tomei Expressway, Shin-Tomei Expressway, and Izu Jukan Expressway, then follow the national and prefectural roads. From Tokyo, it takes about 2.5 to 4 hours (depending on your starting point and traffic conditions). Parking is available at your accommodation or in town.
  • Public transportation: The most common route is to take the JR or Izukyu Line to the nearest major station, then take a local bus (Tokai Bus, etc.) to Matsuzaki or Kumomi. Public transportation is infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • Taxi: If there are few bus services, it is safe to take a taxi from the nearest station. The fare varies depending on the distance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: A half-day to full day of hot spring bathing, a stroll around the area, and some light beach fun. You can easily enjoy it by taking advantage of the day-use baths and meals at the inn.
  • Accommodation: We recommend a two-day, one-night stay. You can enjoy the sunset and morning seascapes, as well as local seafood. If you plan to do diving, fishing, or sightseeing in the area, two nights or more is more comfortable.

Nearby spots

  • Matsuzaki Town's old townscape: Enjoy a stroll through the traditional townscape, including Namako walls.
  • Koganezaki Coast and Koganezaki Park: A scenic spot in Nishiizu, with beautiful sunsets and sea erosion views.
  • Dogashima (accessible by car): A tourist destination known for sightseeing boats and cave tours (please note travel times).
  • Nearby swimming and diving spots: Nishiizu has a wealth of diving spots where you can enjoy the underwater scenery.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During the tourist season (summer vacation, consecutive holidays, and the best time to see the sunset), accommodations and parking lots will be crowded. Especially at sunset, people will gather at the observation points, so please allow plenty of time.
  • Public transport frequency: Some bus routes have limited service. Please check return times in advance and make sure you have transportation available at late hours.
  • Bathing etiquette: Rules for public baths and inns (such as whether tattoos are allowed or whether soap can be used) vary from facility to facility, so be sure to check beforehand. Please follow general hot spring etiquette, such as using the washing area properly and staying quietly.
  • Ocean safety: When playing on the rocks, snorkeling, or diving, be aware of tide levels and wave conditions. There are falling rocks and slippery rocky areas, so proper equipment and caution are required. Avoid traveling alone and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
  • Nature conservation: In some areas, collecting marine life or touching coral is prohibited. Please follow local rules and take your trash home with you.
  • Mobile phone/facilities: Signals may be weak in some areas, and there may be few ATMs or convenience stores. We recommend bringing cash and essential items.

When planning your trip, it's a good idea to check the latest information (opening times, bus schedules, temporary closures, etc.) from your accommodation or local tourist information center. Enjoy the sea and hot springs of Kumomi at your leisure.
