Sea of Clouds Terrace (Shimukappu Village, Hokkaido)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Unkai Terrace is a sea of clouds viewing spot located in Shimukappu Village (Tomamu District), Yufutsu District, Hokkaido, and its greatest attraction is being able to see the "sea of clouds" up close from the observation deck located at the top of the mountain. Originally developed as part of a resort development, it has become highly popular both in Japan and overseas due to the appearance of a sea of clouds that spreads out below you in the early morning when the season and weather conditions are just right. On days when the sea of clouds appears, a fantastical landscape unfolds, and popular activities include photography, early morning walks, breakfast plans while gazing at the sea of clouds, and events (such as morning yoga).
Highlights

- Early morning sea of clouds: This tends to occur before or just after sunrise, and the ever-changing contrast between the light and the clouds is a highlight.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Early morning visits and crowds: On days when the sea of clouds is expected, the area will be extremely crowded. Plan to arrive early to avoid long wait times for the gondola and crowded parking lots. On popular days, the area may be fully booked and you may need to get a numbered ticket or make a reservation.
- Clothing and cold weather measures: The temperature is low in the early morning and it feels even colder on the mountain. Be sure to bring windproof and cold weather measures (thick jacket, gloves, hat, etc.). Temperature differences are particularly large in spring and autumn.
- Weather-related suspension: Gondola operations may be suspended or cancelled in the event of fog, strong winds, or bad weather, so please check the official website or contact us in advance.
- Manners: The observation area will be crowded. Please observe basic manners such as not blocking the walkways or other people's views when taking photos, taking your trash with you, and not entering designated off-limits areas. Commercial photography and drone use may be subject to restrictions or require permission.
- Insects and footing: Insects (such as mosquitoes) can appear in the summer, so it is useful to bring insect repellent. The paths on the mountain can be muddy or slippery in places, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Preparations other than clothing: The morning sun and the light on the snow surface can be dazzling, so we recommend sunglasses, spare camera batteries, and waterproof measures.
lastly
Because the sea of clouds is a natural phenomenon, there is no guarantee that it will appear, but on days when the conditions are right, the view is truly breathtaking. Before visiting, be sure to check the official website for gondola operations, event information, and the forecast for the day (if any), and be sure to take precautions against the cold in the early morning and observe proper etiquette to enjoy the fantastic sea of clouds experience.
